Manager Ange Postecoglou

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Pretty sure he said theres simply more important things that need fixing.

basically yeah, that's how i read it. He wants to get the foundation right first in terms of how we play in attack, how we recover the ball when we loose. the transitions of plays.

the zonal marking from corners maybe he hasn't looked at it too much yet, it was conte who implemented it. there wasn't really much complaints about Zonal the previous two seasons

Get the foundations down, make sure the attack is better, make sure we can keep the ball better, we defend in transition better etc.

If we keep the ball better, we concede less corners. That's quite obviously what he's saying. These things are much more of a priority. If we were better in attack, we d have threatened Woolwich more. But take a look at the first corner we conceded... Weren't good enough on the ball, yet.

Hate to be a broken record and bring up Klopps Liverpool but in his first season, only two teams conceded more goals from set pieces than they did... Second season? 10th best record. Third season? 5th best. Next season? 2nd best. That's without bringing Anges Celtic team and the difference in set piece records over his two seasons.

Getting this philosophy down takes priority over everything for these managers. Once that's ingrained, the finer details come.

But. Proof is in the pudding. We will see next season, I reckon we'll have conceded less from set pieces and look alot better defensively than we do now as the players get more and more comfortable (as well as bringing in players to suit in attack)

But it is something we could and should be working on by now. There's no improvement in that area.
I get that but at the end of the day it becomes and individual thing as well as a collective. If one player switches off and his player scores then you could have practiced them for hours and hours and it makes not one bit of difference. If the delivery and timing of the run is right you are in trouble no matter what.
I do think there’s tweaks to be made in who is zonal if we continue with that and who is picking up. It scares the shit out if me seeing Brennan Johnson,Sonny or madders picking up big aggressive centre backs! That’s a disaster waiting to happen.
When these types get a run on you you are fucked. Even more so when our bigger and most aggressive players are trying to defend from a standing jump compared to the opposition’s coming at a pace. They will always be favourites to win it. That’s where the tweak has to come from and I think we’ll see an improvement. Also Vic should be doing more to take the pressure off the lads by commanding his 6 yard box regardless of anyone standing in front of him.

Pretty sure we will see an improvement there with set pieces next season. It's not like this stuff is a magic trick you can just improve in a few weeks worth of training. No coach or manager is perfect... Ultimately, it should have been identified earlier, but it is what it is. There are going to be challenges, especially early, I'd rather judge Ange on what we see by Christmas next season.

Someone on reddit pointed out that he had the same issue at Celtic in his first season. They let in a lot of set piece goals, then cut them down by half in his second season.

Manager doesnt get what he wants in the summer, clearly disallusioned and gets the arse from the start of the season, a few iffy results, crowd starts to get on Levys back, sacked in November, new saviour comes in and does well for a bit, doesnt get what he wants in the summer.........We've all seen this film before.

And the happy clappers / pwoppa fans find excuses and lap it up. Every. Single. Time
