I'll concede that I misremembered. His comments in Melbourne said nothing about before pre-season. He referenced about wanting them in early.

However, the core point is the same. My main point was that he was referencing the importance of having time to work with new players. Time that he's not going to have.

Now, having the attitude of "hey, the managers calm, so I should be calm", would be a pretty admirable position to take, if we hadn't seen this before. You cannot ignore the context of history. We had a manager not too long ago that was pretty chill when he kept getting let down. He was even pretty calm when we signed nobody in the summer of 2018. He even said a lot of the things Postecoglou said this summer about "not just signing anybody" etc. Most managers aren't Conte, De Zerbi, Mourinho level lunatics, that will cause trouble out in the open. For the most part, just because a managers seems relaxed doesn't necessarily mean that there's no cause for frustration.

That also then doesn't mean that the logical conclusion is to melt down and write off the season and say we're not signing anybody. But I also don't think we can pretend that everythings going to be fine and there's no cause for worry.

Okay but If you're referencing Ange stating that he wanted players in before pre season then you need to keep the same energy for when he comes out and says that he's calm no? We can't have it both ways - Either you acknowledge that Ange is happy to lay down the law and openly question the club's transfer policy or he's a shrinking violet who toes the club's line, we need to pick an argument.

Every manager needs time to work with new players, ideally in a perfect world we'd have finished our signings around 3 weeks ago so that the manager has time to work with them and take them on tour.

Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world.

What's more is that Ange isn't the only manager in this boat - Woolwich, City, Newcastle and Liverpool are nowhere near to completing their signings either, neither of their managers have got all their players in either and they're already playing on their respective tours as well - this tells you a couple of things:

1) The market is completely dead right now
2) Their targets are probably still away on holiday due to the Intl tournaments and are still getting their futures resolved.

So why should we be any different?

We're talking clubs by the way who normally have their recruitment spot on and have a plan in the TW, it looks to me that this TW is just an anomaly and we just need to accept that the fact that we've had 2 Summer tournaments plus the Olympics in the same Summer and if you look at it there's virtually been no money spent to the equivalent to other TW's around this time, it just is what it is.

Again equating the way we recruit now to how we recruited in the past is just a massive false equivalence, we're a world away from Hitchen for example, bringing up 2018 when we had 0 money to spend pre stadium to now where we are amongst the highest spenders in the league again is pointless, look at the pattern of the last few Summers for example - look at the players we are bringing in, there's clearly a plan and a plan that the manager is fully behind even if the fan's aren't.

You seem like one of the most level headed and informed posters here but I’d love to know what you mean by ‘world class’.
Both KDB and Mo Salah were Prem flops when bought. The last ‘world class’ buy by any team was probably Casimero and look how that turned out.
Previously: Ronaldo(?), Varane, Silva. I dunno.

A couple of City signings: Villa, Silva, Toure but they needed them early to establish credibility.

Was Rodri considered world class when City signed him or potentially world-class?

Us: Klinsmann? BUT not really when you consider the circumstances of his signing and the fact that, once rehabilitated, he fucked off pronto.
(Some might say VdV).
Thanks for the kind words, mate, much appreciated.

In my books, world class mainly means a guy who's been doing big things at the top level for at least 2 or 3 years - for club and country. For a striker that's scoring goals galore eg Kane. For a winger/AM that'll be a few goals and plenty assists. Ederson, Alisson, Oblak are world class goalies cause year in year out they make tons of saves and earn their respective team big points. Etc etc.

As far as we're concerned, I'm all for buying dudes early (and cheaper) and turn them into world class operators - see Bale, Modric. But there's no denying we also need to buy 2 or 3 guys that are already at that level. More often than not they're the difference makers and the ones who get you over the line. Forget about Vinicius and other such wonderkids, Real don't win 15 or so CL without Ramos, Pepe, Modric, Kroos...

Ange said "We know our targets, they haven't changed. We all need to be patient", after he'd already said "I expect a couple more additions"
After he said plenty times he much prefers having everyone in early.

Clearly not speaking as freely as he did early doors. Man's been told to wind his neck in and toe the party line. He's realized where he's at by now.

Don't worry big fella, we've all been there.

There is an element of truth in some of this but

Do you consider VdV and Romero as second and third tier signings?

I would rather them than a varane or casimero who are supposedly world class prem ready players

The clubs policy is clearly to be signing top young talent

Vicario, Udogie, are these not top players ? Or is it that they’re not expensive enough or enough of a household name?
How long we gonna keep using United's flops to justify Levy's policy?

They've still won more trophies than we did them past few years.

And Lord knows I hate the northern cunts.

Yago Santiago is moving to Elche on a permanent. I wish him the best, he obviously wasn't in Ange's plans but by all reports he's a talented player. Also, it's another deal no-one saw coming, Lange is running a tight ship.
You look at Mikey Moore starting to break into the senior squad and it's a no brainer that Santiago could/would/should want to move away.

The reality is also that the youth squad(s) won't all make it here, so in some respects the academy becomes a money generating tool as much as a star generator.

It's this sort of ambition the stadium was built for.

Just think how we ended last season and all the work we've done to address our deficiencies.

Incredible stuff. 👏

Ange is absolutely right to gob-off about winning the title.

Everything we're doing gives substance to what he says and doesn't make us look ridiculous at all.

The season starts in just over 2 weeks... we're ready!

Let's fucking go!

People get misled by watching player comps thinking the player is better than they really are.

I’m worried Milan will eventually find Royals comp on YouTube.
His "no-look" passes are impressive at first glance, but dig a little deeper and you realise he can get away with that shit because whether he's looking or not doesn't bloody matter to the outcome of anything he tries...
