The brilliant Croatian team that got spanked 4-1 the next game? It was a solid Croatian team but one that benefited from being on the easy half of the bracket.

No one remembers that Croatia team if England knocks them out.

I understand your point about England not really being outplayed in some losses. But you must also take into consideration how many times did England win without outplaying the opposition?

England doesn’t consistently dominate the opposition. And if you don’t do that, you are only going to win tournaments with a whole lot of luck.

But it was a Croatia team that, back then, was much better than England in reality. They had prime Modric, Perisic, Mandzukic etc. So a narrow loss to them in extra time was no disgrace, and they certainly weren't out played unless you just forget about the first half entirely.

You can easily argue that England only lose in recent history to really good teams, and that's despite having Southgate in charge. And while we were poor in the last Euros we dispatched teams easily in the previous tournament to that. Putting 6 past Iran, 3 past Senegal and Wales, 4 past Ukraine.
