Ange Postecoglou says ‘hard to keep a lid’ on Tottenham’s Mikey Moore after AZ victory

Ange Postecoglou has praised Mikey Moore’s maturity but admitted it will be “pretty hard to keep a lid” on the Tottenham Hotspur winger’s talent after he was compared to Neymar by James Maddison.

Moore became the youngest player to represent Tottenham in the Premier League in May when he came off the bench against Manchester City aged 16 but Postecoglou has been cautious with his playing time.

Moore, who only turned 17 in August, made his second start for Spurs in their 1-0 victory over AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday evening. He started on the right wing and showed flashes of his brilliance but he was excellent after switching to the left at half-time.

The England Under-19 international impressed with his dribbling and whipped a few dangerous crosses into the box. Maddison joked to TNT Sports after the game that “from minute 45-65 I thought we had Neymar on the left wing.”

Postecoglou said of Moore after the win of AZ: “He was exciting, you cannot deny it.

“There is no point denying it. I love the way Mikey is taking it all in his stride, he works hard every day. He wants to develop, he understands that this is a journey. It’s very easy for a young guy like him, who has just turned 17, to feel like he has somehow made it, but you never get that sense.

“It’s exciting. You have got such a young player, who wants that responsibility to make an impact, rather than just sometimes with young players they are a bit worried about making mistakes. He is developing well. We have to be really careful about how we use him, and when we use him, that is the key for us, particularly in these early stages.”

Moore has made three appearances off the bench in the league this season but he was an unused substitute in last weekend’s 4-1 victory over West Ham United. He will hope to be involved when Spurs travel to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

My instinct is the same as others.. That he's got to be protected etc.. But really isn't that kind of a myth? I can't think of a player that "should" have been elite, but didn't become so because he played too much when he was 17/18. I just think you've either got it to go all the way or you don't. If Mikey Moore has "it". Then him becoming a big part of our squad at a young age isn't going to ruin him.

Fati & Pedri have already fucked themselves physically.

I know his life has been complicated; but at aged just 24 Dele was complaining that he couldn't physically do the things he used to.

Michael Owen?

Had a decent career and played for a lot of big clubs, but he could've been one of the greatest.

He was amazing in the 2nd half, and eventually had three AZ players marking him. As an individual he looked very skilful, and I can see him becoming a fantastic playmaker.

Already better than Werner and Johnson. Streets ahead of both in drive and technical ability.

Classic overrating young players after a couple good turns/runs/whatever. The kid has played a couple games. He is certainly not “already better than Johnson.” He’s never even scored a goal for the senior side. He hasn’t even had a chance to have good form/bad form/how does he respond. I’m excited about him, he definitely looks to have a lot of ability but there’s a lot more to being a top player.

Young players frequently look bright and confident when they break through and most fizzle out. Are they as good after they make a couple mistakes? After they go through a rough patch of form? Pick up some injuries, play 3 games in a week? Werner at RB Leipzig was better than anything Mikey Moore has ever done. People used to do this with PEH all the time. Every MF who did a body feint was already better than PEH who meanwhile was playing 50 games a year with good performances against big teams in club and international competition. But when young players haven’t played enough to actually make mistakes, have their weaknesses found out, etc. we just think they are “better.” It’s already happened with Bergvall imo. People were anointing him after some good turns in his first sub appearance. Then he makes a mistake, plays some more and has just been ok. Just as we shouldn’t cast young players out early…we probably shouldn’t anoint them so early either.

More than the greatest love the world has known
This is the love i'll give to you alone
More than the simple words I try to say
I only live to love you more each day...

More than you'll ever know
My arms long to hold you so
My life will be in your keeping
Waking... sleeping... laughing... weeping...

Longer than always is a long long time
But far beyond forever you'll be mine
I know I never lived before
And my heart is very sure
No one else could love you more

Not really sure how people don't realise he isn't just "" being played out of position to accommodate "- Its about getting minutes into a 17 year old who needs games to develop.

We know he's not a right winger in the long term any more than we know Gray probably isn't a right back (or centre back or left back) - he's not out there to accommodate Werner. He's there to get minutes and continue to learn and grow, especially in a situation where perhaps he's less comfortable.

He was electric at times last night. Not an earth shattering performance. But you saw fearlessness in a kid who just wants to play football. It's important it's not coached out of him because at Spurs this kid can be whatever he wants to be.

Still don't think he's a winger though and would flourish centrally.

Guess my concern on being protected primarily comes from how Michael Owen’s career went but can’t currently think of any others so hoping you’re right - be great to see much much more of him. He’s genuinely exciting to watch which we’ve really missed.
