I’m reminded of finding an old diary when I was cleaning out my mum's house, from when I was about 14. I'd had a date, I obviously thought it was a huge success (we never went out again), but there it was "the best day of my life". My first reaction on reading it as a 50-year-old was obviously a massive cringe, but then I thought...

Why ever not? That boy was ecstatic with emotion - me too, but he was there. My pathetic diary entry too, I was blissful. The rest doesn't matter, we all live for these moments, regardless if your 8 or 80. It's what joins us, fundamentally.

Bill for some reason this reminded me of myself in primary school, P5-P7 (equivalent these days to Year 4 to 6 in England I think).

I went through those years with a hopeless crush on a girl from my class. She asked me out on the very last day of school in P7 before we all parted ways, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. I didn’t even actually arrange that date and never even saw her again until a brief hello aged 17 or 18!

This isn’t just a blatant “11 year old Mike was quite the babe magnet” post…

Partly I’m riffing on the fact that even as a kid years of being a hopeless unrequited romantic were worth it for that moment of payoff. Built me up for being a Spurs fan in the years ahead.

But also, a couple of years back I found photos my parents took of me coming home from that last day at primary school. It was a non-uniform day, it was 1992, and I was wearing that awesome yellow away shirt with that whatever-it-was pattern on the shoulder. No wonder she saw the light.

I’ve actually still got it.
