Player Mathys Tel

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Because club tv put a microphone in his face?
Indeed. He could have said he was looking forward to working with Tel and left it at that. Instead, he expanded on that, which kind of gives the tell (excuse the pun) that he actually IS looking forward to working with him, and he sees a lot of talent for him to develop further.

It's not that hard. If you're meh about a player you keep the answer short and sweet. TF didn't regarding Tel.

Again, I'm not claiming Frank is either happy about the signing or not. But, part of his job as the manager is 100% to talk up new signings as part of the club's media. If he would have kept it "short and sweet" that would have looked very weird. It's promo..not news.

Also Postecoglou had announced that Tel would be here next season before he even kicked a ball for Spurs. So the loan spell was never a trial, rather I suspect use the loan fee as a down payment on the transfer.

And now Frank is talking Tel up most likely without seeing any more of him than posters on this forum.

Started to turn on Frank already he rates a player you don’t 😅

I mean it's not some conspiracy, Tel has been a much hyped player for years now, showed some flashes with Bayern and Lange and the data munchers clearly believe he's got the traits to go to the very top, as they did about Archie Gray.

The whole club fought very hard to get him in the door, remember what a saga it was, and very nearly paid ~53ish million pounds to sign him permanently at the time.

He played a fair bit of football here in his half season loan and didn't really show that. That has secured a pretty significant discount from the originally quoted price, but the recruitment operation, which has been the focus of major investment and emphasis at the club, has the courage of its convictions on this one. A data-driven operation trusts its data on stuff like this.

We hired Frank to make moves like this pay off. Best of luck.

Why all the downers about Tel?
In pretty extensive playing time in a system built to highlight traits like his he looked pretty off the pace and overwhelmed, and is no longer a teenager.

He's more reclamation project than wunderkind at this stage for me. Obvious ability and seems like a good character, but it has been moments and flashes of performance at best.

His market value was less than what we paid, for me.

I think if you stick any average PL attacking player in the Bayern Munich team, their data will appear to be better because they play with better players than most if not all of the other teams in their league. I'd be surprised if his data is as good regarding his loan spell here last season. The fact that his price has reduced may well reflect that, as you say.

Take CCV for example he was average at Spurs but at Celtic he's very highly spoke of, and his data will probably be higher there than it was at our club, because the standard of his present team is greater in that league, than it was for us in our league.

So the data approach requires context and that means it can be skewed depending how well the context is applied.

Nevertheless, I will get behind him and hope he does well at the club.
