Apparently Forest have been trying to get him to sign a new contract for a year. He hasn’t wanted to engage. Following Spurs bid they have presented a new contract with no release clause.

MGW can resolve this by saying “I will sign a new contract with a £62.5m release clause and if Tottenham meet that you’ve got to let me go. Just don’t sue my agent”

What would they sue his agent for?

They can't prove anything.

What does this even mean? Are Forest not oblidged to accept the 60m offer already submitted?
Forest/Marinakis clearly believes that the release clause is null and void (possibly because MGW's agents leaked it) and thus that they do not have to accept that it has been triggered.

Thus Spurs are discussing if they should come in with a new offer above the OG release clause to see if all that Marinakis is after is more money.

What is the point of a confidential release clause? Why put something in a contract that is secret that is of benefit to the player? It contradicts the whole purpose of a clause.

How are the two of you intending to confirm whether or not we pay over £60m? (I'm not being obtuse, I'm just trying to foresee a potential sticking point...)

It means a club cant keep a player if the player thinks a fair price has been offered.

Someone comes in with an £80m bid they cant refuse and say we want 90m. Gives the player more options.

The player backs himself to be worth more than the clause and will get offers in the future.

Jeez, this question has been asked and answered about 50 times. Such a clause would protect the player by enabling him to insist on the move if a club happened to bid on or over the clause amount and he wanted to go - the fact that the bidding club wouldn't know that is irrelevant, it would still enable the player to insist on the move. It doesn't contradict anything (I don't even know what you mean by that sentence - the clause is between MGW and Forest, there is no need for us to be aware, we are not party to the contract, we just happen to be a triggering event via our bid).

Fair question, but I feel like the dispute over the release clause should make it pretty clear. Either Forest backs down with regard to the bid that was made last Thursday or they don't, the reporting will specify that.

I can't imagine a scenario in which some nominal sweetener makes the deal happen. If we're held to ransom above the clause it will be obvious.

We're men of honor, I'm sure we can resolve any lack of clarity.

How do you trigger a release clause that people aren't supposed to know exists? I suppose, logically, the procedure is to make an offer on the off chance. But if you trigger it do you really need to ask permission to talk to the player, because at that point it's game on anyway.
