At this point they seem to genuinely just sign players for no other reason than to stockpile and make sure that their rivals don't get them.
It's batshit crazy and you have to wonder how Everton can get fined and penalised, but Chelsea, who started the whole thing always seem to get away scot free.

How the hell did they survive Abramovich leaving?? Did he really take a billion pound loss when he sold them?

This. He suits teams that defend more. We'll play that way in maybe a quarter of our matches. In the rest we will need someone that gets the ball forward with accuracy.

I think we're all still carrying the wounds of our horrible defending in the past 2-3 years that we feel this signing makes sense.
I think there's something to be said for getting some older players in for the younger ones to learn from. Players don't show up knowing how to win in the Premier League and some leaders by example would be useful even if they aren't all at the peak of their careers. You don't want too many of those guys, but mixing some in is good.

No matter how many players Chelsea buys there's only one ball on the pitch. I don't see them molding a cohesive team out of that mass of players. They have an American owner and those guys think putting together a football team is like assembling a collection of baseball cards.

It's certainly nothing new il give u that. But the vast majority of fans here have been screaming for a better quality or top quality cm and ur saying the very very best we can do is paulinha on a loan? Like, does that really satisfy you're ambition?

A decent option in certainly circumstances, yes. But id look at archie gray in that way for this coming season. Tbh, even if u added paulinha to our current squad id still pick 2 of our current crop ahead of him so where's the big improvement?

Sorry for being bit straighforward here, but do you purely rate players on the level of their club CV?
And if so, then Bayern should be pretty effing nice destination to snap players out of. From top of my head, last their "outcast" just won EPL as starter (Gravenberch).
Or is it just media hype you are after? Or what exactly.
Or do you just need us to pay 100 million, is that what makes player "an improvement"?

Cause again - Palinha was phenomenal player in EPL. In his position only player who could be considered better at some point might have been Rodri and potentially Rice.

So what is this "best we can do is Palinha on loan" supposed to mean exactly?
I mean when you say that to DM position you would pick "2 of our current crop" then I don't really know what to say. Sure you can pick like 14th best player instead of 3rd best in the position. Then ofc you have no improvement. But that is purely down to your very messed up perception of players qualities. Again, I assume due to him not costing 100 mil and not being in front of some tabloid transfer speculations. Having watched EPL for years I can draw no other logical conclusion.

First of all - defending also has to be done in every game. Either we have more possession than opposition or not. And winning ball back in midifield/even opposition half also helps attacking side, you know.
Second of all - how the fuck do you know how Frank plans to play exactly?!? Guy has had one pre-season friendly against lesser opposition so far.
Third - we WILL face very strong (and also quite attacking minding) teams in this season - City, Liverpool to begin with and pretty sure we also have a play-date with PSG. So EVEN IF we forget my "first of all" - there WILL be games where opposition will have more of the ball. And legit DM would come in handy too.
Fourth - yes, ofc people are affected by poor defending. But that is not all. We also have never had a really strong and trustworthy DM since Dembele and Wanyama times. More than 2-3 years really.

So I don't actually get it at all why people bitch about signing very thoroughly proven EPL level player and only creaming over likes of Hjulmand and Gomes and whatnot. Who might so very well be just next comings of Ndombelly and Lo Celso.
