Gooner account but still accurate thread . Frank being very conservative

The good news is he wasn't so conservative that he put out a CM 3 of Sarr, Palh and Benta again. Lucas is the difference maker vs Benta that makes the formation good enough offensively to work. With Spence learning how to overlap and combine with Xavi better down the left, I doubt we'll be as easily contained going forward as we were in the first half vs Spam. It's a good start from Frank- you might say we've lacked a bit offensively, but on the other hand we're conceding practically nothing so far. Hard to be mad at that.

Yer that sounds about right. Fine margins but we do look to be rather conservative. Can't complain much as that has led us to conceding just 1 goal so far.
I do hope that soon enough we will let the handbrake off a little against teams we are clearly better than.
Fine margins but xavi at 10 and a lw like muani/odobert will make us much more dominant on the ball and more of a tricky customer for opposition.

Very happy overall so far though, just spotting areas for us to develop and improve. Ball retention and progression through the lines is our biggest deficiency right now.

That thread is probably fair, but I think Frank is emphasizing defensive solidity above all else before getting more expansive offensively.

This seems entirely reasonable considering where we were at tactically before and also a reflection of the relative weakness of our attacking options before Simons and Kolo Muani arrived and with Maddison, Solanke, and Kulusevski unavailable.

We definitely can’t be this conservative all season and expect to thrive, but as he builds tactical principles into the side and we integrate new signings and players returning from injury it’s fine enough.

We will see the best of this system once Xavi is integrated as the 10.

Sarr/Bergvall do a decent job crashing the box but neither are lock pickers or great link players.

A real shame we have no Maddison as I think he'd be immense under Frank.

“It’s (the pointing celebration) for the coach - he’s there! He’s there!” beamed Pape. “He spoke about it at half-time. He just told me when the ball arrives there, you will score. It was good timing. I scored - and it’s for the coach.”

It’s such a relief to be watching pragmatism rather than dogmatism. I don’t expect any parking the bus, but the difference between Postecoglou and Frank from the point of view of ensuring a solid foundation is night and day. I can’t pretend that I was blown away by his appointment, but by Jove he knocks the previous incumbent into a cocked hat for me. Very early days, but I like what we’re seeing.

I think Frank has been fantastic so far! We’ve had a fairly tricky first few games (city away is still bloody hard, west ham away is always a tough fixture, a fully fit Bournemouth team can get a result against anyone) and we’ve looked fairly comfy for the majority of the minutes! Once he has that defensive foundation we will improve going forward! Let’s not forget he’s not had solanke, madders and Kulu at all

“Manchester United will keep my style, insists Amorim, despite heavy derby defeat”

What is it with these managers who cling to one philosophy no matter what? Russell Martin another perfect example, probably the worst manager I’ve ever seen at this level, is obsessed with his system no matter the damage it does.

The best thing about Frank is he’s not chained to one philosophy. You can’t slap a label on his sides and call it ‘Thomas Frank football.

'Frank-ball' doesn't sound right anyway.

Is clunky and doesn't really roll off the tongue.

Absolutely, and it's much more than pragmatism, isn't it?
I would highlight DESIRE. Postecoglou LIKES winning (who doesn't?), but Frank WANTS to win. Postecoglou's attitude seems to be, "Ah well mate, ya win some ya lose some. We move on.", whereas Frank's attitude seems to be, "Before the game, during the game and after the game, I will do anything I possibly can to secure a victory."
His desire leads to him enjoying the process and wanting more & more of it, whereas for Ange the process seems to be a hated, painful thing to be endured, and he wishes it would go away.
Earlier, someone rightly compared them to night and day. They're also 'glass half full' and 'glass half empty' personalities.

The differences between Thomas and Ange could hardly be greater.

It is the generation of managers raised on Pep and Klopp's cults of personality.

But they ignore the fact that both Pep and Klopp are very pragmatic managers who changed things regularly. Without abandoning their philosophies but still ever changing.

One of my (very few) concerns with his appointment was the prospect of potentially being boring to watch. But we're not - far from it. It's great to see us looking like a properly coached team again.

It's very early days too so long may it continue and I hope for continuous improvement :)
