Player João Palhinha

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Palhinha doesn’t simply ‘excel’ at one thing. He’s elite — arguably the best at that one thing in the Premier League. I certainly considered that he was at 27 /28 when he played for Fulham. He was good enough to go to one of the three best sides in Europe and play for the Nations Cup winners.

The issue isn’t Palhinha but who he’s paired with in midfield. I don’t think anyone is suggesting that he starts every game and runs the midfield but I’d rather have him than a totally mediocre 6-8 hybrid like Betancur. Given that Manuel Ugarte cost £42 million plus a chunk in add-ons then someone is going to be happy to pay £25m to use him under the right circumstances. Let’s see how he pans out over the course of the next half of the season before deciding that he’s a write-off.

Yeah, I can accept your opinion of him as a National League journeyman or that of Marco Silva, Tom Cairney or Roberto Martinez amongst others as well as Fulham, Tottenham and Bayern’s scouts who generally aren’t inclined to sign National League standard players. I can also ignore all the statistics that suggest he’s elite at what he’s (primarily) in the team for because I’m sure that they’re all wrong and you’re right.
The stranger thing is you don't have that creep on ignore!

I prefer him to Bentancur, who is wildly inconsistent. Paulinha's a proper bastard and very useful (and enjoys a goal). Age is a factor but, that aside, I'll always want someone like this in the team. If there's someone equivalent or better out there who's available and younger then of course wave goodbye. But until then? Keep.

It's called the eye test?

Tell me, do you want to sign him at the end of this season for 25m?

Nah, didn't think so...
The only thing that would give me caution is his age and wages (as somebody else mentioned) and the fact that we’ve re-signed Bents. I would rather pair an elite 6 with an elite 8 than have a couple of hybrids who don’t do either particularly well.

I can only imagine what a great partnership he would have made with Dembele as he’s probably better than both Dier or Wanyama in a DM role.

As for an eye test, I would suggest you hurry up and get one.

For me ... ideally next season we'd have a MF of:

- Palhinha
- Bergvall
- Gray
- Sarr
- Kulu
- Xavi
- Madders (who knows whether he'll ever be the same player)
- NEW elite no8

He's a good player and he's been excellent for us in certain games, and as a loan signing he has already been worth bringing him in.

But I wouldn't sign him permanently at this stage. He will be on decent wages, and he will be 30 next season.

With Bissouma leaving, that will open a squad space up and we should be looking to bring in a technical passing CM who can pass between the lines. Wharton would be the dream.

If we can find room for him, I wouldn't be against bringing him in as experience, he is definitely useful for certain games and situations. The reality is though he isn't the future of our CM and I can't ever see him playing regularly as one of the two CMs.

And wasting permanent budget and squad space on him doesn't seem like great squad planning.

Maybe you should remove your Palhinha tinted glasses... when as he ever dominated a game for us. Go look at the first Woolwich goal. In fact I can find several goals we've conceded where his effort is underwhelming. Honestly, no wonder we are regressing when fans like you accept the likes of Palhinha as a top signing. He wouldn't make the bench of any of our perceived rivals and that is how you should evaluate any new player we are buying.

No one said that.

The only thing I’ve gleaned from this exchange is that you don’t know a National League player from a Premier League player and you think we’re still in the 1960s when a squad was 11 players and a substitute.

Exchange over.
Exchange not over.

What I've gleaned from this exchange is that your football knowledge can be written on the back of a stamp and there would still be room to list our full squad, their d.o.b and their appearances by season.

Exchange now over.

A 31 year old Palhinha, which is what he will be before the next season starts, at 25 million isn't cheap. He would have virtually no resale value, and a few years of him tackling people at a decreasing efficiency due to aging wouldn't be worth all that.

Hell, If Levy had sanctioned some equivalent of such a move, it would have been crucified as another instance of this overblown notion of Levynomics. I'm shocked at the suggestion to be honest.

If Bentancur is actually staying, making this permanent would only take minutes away from Gray while ensuring that we won't sign a DM. Be careful what you wish for.

hes the best hunter of the ball ive seen in football, dont think it was a yellow either. just need to get gray and someone else to be within 15 yards of him when he does win it, play it snappy to them and we are off.

They haven’t declined though. 2.93 last season and 3.03 this season. Learn how to read a graph.
This is the same shit I have to deal with amongst my friends...

Also different teams...

Also doesn't show were they accurate passing or not??? man can just lob a ball forward into the void of the pitch & it's counted...Like when I was talking about another player that just renewed their contract this year but this isn't their thread...

I think he's not being used properly. The guy is there to break up the play and and then move the ball on to one of the other two mids. I would like to see him with Simons and one of Gray or Bergvall in the middle in the second half of the season.

He is miles better than Bentancur, Bent is a scam. best played in lower cup games... can't hold up against anyone good.
