We'll probably know fairly soon if De Zerbi wants him gone. Imagine there will either be leaks that "De Zerbi sees Romero as a key part of his project" or, more likely, transfer links to other clubs in the coming weeks.
What to do with Romero is one of the key decisions Roberto has to make this summer and I'm not sure there's a middle ground - you've either got to double down, say he's a key player and keep him as captain, or you tell him to find a new club. Taking away the captaincy but keeping him at the club serves nobody and we'd just end up with a sulky Romero looking to leave anyway.
My guess is De Zerbi probably likes him as a bloke and a footballer, but will feel the need to move him on as a symbolic way of starting afresh. Romero's captaincy represents pretty much everything that went wrong last season: injuries, suspensions, ill-discipline off the field, general chaos. Probably best to just cut loose and get rid off the distractions and drama, even if he does like what he offers on the pitch.
Jay Harris also said on VFTL that Romero's only been available for like 60-odd% of games since he arrived. That alone makes it worth moving him on imo - he's just not available enough to be relied on.
