Could be off the mark but my hunch with Alexander-Arnold is that he's not a great character to have around if he's not starting - he's fantastic at what he does but he's always had a bit of an ego on him and I can imagine him being frustrated if Tuchel considers him 3rd/4th choice and he's not getting on the pitch. Similar for Maguire who immediately acted a knob when he wasn't selected.

One thing I do really like about the squad is he does seem to have picked players that will be overjoyed to be there and are hungry to play for England, rather than filling the squad with the best players on paper who might not foster a great team spirit.

I think that’s why Maguire wasn’t also picked. He’s always been a regular starter. But had he gone he would have been benched. No good having him around if he’s got a face like a smacked arse. He’s no oil painting to begin with. I think someone like Burn will just be extremely pleased to be there on the other hand.

It’s clear Tuchel wants as much harmony in the squad as possible, which is why a few big names aren’t there.
