Player Mathys Tel

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I'll give Tel 1 more season to prove himself (if de Zerbi want him to stay, of course) - because it takes time to build quality EPL players.
For example, look at Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers: at 21 neither were seen as top-class players - Palmer not getting regular footy at Man City and Rogers sold by Boro to Villa for paltry £8m (potentially rising to £15m). Semenyo was at Bristol City until he was 23 then sold to Bournemouth for £10m. Salah was at Basel until he was 22 (scoring unimpressive 9 goals in 47 games) before being sold to Chelski for £11m. Nidaya, at 23, was sold by Sheff Utd, to Marseille for £20m, only to be sold to Everton for £16m a year later. And the list can go on...
No, I am NOT saying Tel will become as good as those players I mentioned but I personally won't give up on him.
Ndiaye (who many Spurs fan fancy) got 6 goals and 3 assists in 2,789 minutes this season.
Tel got 4 goals, 1 assist in 1,343 minutes. He actually had a better rate of G/A per minutes than Ndiaye despite being in a weaker team who had a very messy season.

Future star. Tel had character and talent, just need a well organized team for him to play and he will start to delivery. If we have Kudus, Madders, Deki, Xavi around him he will start to play a lot better then with Richarlison and Muani.

Think the biggest thing he needs to work on is his decision making tbh. He often shows promise, can beat a man, has a good shot on him, a decent cross - lots of tools in his locker - but it often feels extremely random. He's just as liable to punt/run ball straight out of play as he is to do something productive.

He's a rough diamond. The next test will be whether he can take on board coaching and improve or if he's always gonna be a bit of a loose maverick type player.

Pretty much the only forward we had this season who could stay fit and consistently generate dangerous situations and also arrive on the end of dangerous situations

Does knucklead head things but will also get better at reducing those with age and experience at this level

Yea, actually giving him one more season does make sense in wider scope too.

Let's face it - our squad needs a lot of additions in the summer. Even if all 3 rumored defensive side additions (Robertson, Senesi, van Hecke) will get done, we will still desperately need a top level CM, top level winger and top level ST. Plus one more keeper to replace 2nd choice Vicario.

This in turn means that we will not bring more than 1 top level LW's in. So we can bring in 1 and see how Tel fares + how and when does Odobert recover and on what level will Kulu play. After coming season we have more info on those things + Tel has got more time to prove and develop.

Next summer we can make a decision who of them will make it (or make back).

Just that I would be even more supportive of Tel if he wouldn't have gotten moody in Jan with quite credible speculation of him wanting to leave. Apart from that speculation all I have seen has 100% been mature and hard-working.

You don't half talk some utter fucking shite. Cole Palmer had made his England debut at 21 and moved for £40m (Likely £42.5 m) to Chelsea because he wanted to play more in a team that was the best in the world arguably...then had this season before he turned 22 (in May 2024).

Clown.

I feel the same about Tel as I did about Hojbjerg; If he stays he stays, if he goes he goes. I'm not particularly bothered one way or the other. But I still see him as a Moura-esque impact player and really need to see him move up a level. We've had too many 'almost there' players for too long.

News Bournemouth wants him. For 30 M I have no problem to see him go there and I have faith that he will become good in two years but he isn’t in the level ti lead our attack and with no game time he won’t improve.

I pray nouveaux riches Paris FC make us an offer we can't refuse.

Fuck me, they can have him & Odobert for a combined 40 mil.
These sort of posts just shows we have the shittist fans around when it comes to complaining about young players. This is always followed up by bemoaning why we didn’t sign the likes of Whaton earlier too

Tel, Odobert, Gray, Bergvall all need time, structure and support and they will improve

Some of our fans deserved this season and they still are doubling down on the stupidity of it all.

Difference is that there was consistently ‘something’ about Son, Palmer, Bergvall etc when they were younger (just to name from the lists above). Tel hasn’t had that - I suspect that’s why Bayern let him go. They bought him as a hot prospect but there wasn’t enough there.

Reference to Moura above, too - nope - he actually made an impact when he came on. Tel’s decision making is awful. Not nearly as good as he thinks he is in his own head but doesn’t seem to be getting better. He can stay or go - don’t mind, but he’s not the answer.

Good post, and whatTel doesn’t lack is confidence or courage.
