We are a big club, true but so is everyone in the premier league, why would Villa sell Benteke? The money might be nice but it will cost them way more to replace him with someone equal or better..

I imagine Villa have had a plan for the sale of Benteke for a long time now, they'll have replacements shortlisted as the window goes on, we've got to hope Adebayor is one of those.

Agree that they won't have fully settle either but, they smashed us 3-0 last time and finished 4th so are well ahead of us before taking their signings into account.

They've spent over £300m in the past two seasons, I think sometimes we have to accept we're not that sort of club and subsequently we can't quite compete with them. However I don't believe United will be fit and ready for this match, they've got a preseason to go through without an injury disrupting them as well as learn systems of play. Our first game against them last year was a 0-0 and generally speaking, we don't do too badly against United, when you compare the difference in fortunes and squads.

First of all I don't think we should be signing a striker to play second fiddle to Kane. We should be signing a striker to challenge Kane. Or play along side him. Rotate with him. Take his place when his form dips. Kane as had 1 great season. We're too big a club to simply hope he has another. If we really want to push on there are plenty of players we could afford. Why not push the boat out and go for Benteke. Surely Hernandez would offer more than Rhodes. Why not pay West Brom what they want for Berahino. Make Everton an offer they can't refuse for Lukaku. We are a fucking BIG club. All of these players should be within our grasp. And they would all offer more than Jordan Rhodes. And the most frustrating thing is we have the money to go for this calibre of player. ENIC just won't fucking spend it.
We are a big club, true but so is everyone in the premier league...Of course we need another striker but I think it's unlikely to be from the prem because the costs will be too high and the clubs have no reason to sell to us right now..
Point is, we need at least two quality strikers. We were 5th last year, Kane plus a kid or an outcast we don't want is pathetic. No club goes into a season in that situation unless they're a shambles and, any fans that think it's ok are deluded.
If we are keeping Soldado and going to give him one more chance then we have to play to his strengths when he plays - not sure Poch would or could.
Ade has been an enigma generally, now he's totally lost. Could show brilliance without a doubt but never would more than now and again.

It's a problem, it needs addressing
.
I'm only suggesting Premier league strikers because I don't follow European football enough to name reasonable targets. However, what I'm really saying is we need someone to challenge Kane. NOT someone simply as back up. And to suggest Jordan Rhodes as a viable option is, to be honest, taking the fucking piss.

From Sky:

CHERRIES LINKED TO BERBATOV
Bournemouth have been linked with a move for former Tottenham and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov.
According to talkSPORT, Eddie Howe is interested in bringing the Monaco star to Dean Court on a free transfer.

I still would!!! ...those eyes!!!!

Could Grant Ward be a mid season (January - on loan to Rotherham) find? Seems to have a good game, scoring goals and creating chances whenever he plays, admittedly at a lower level than the premier league. I don't know, but probably one to keep an eye on like Pritchard last year. He played on the right wing in a pre-season friendly and scored two goals despite the Rotherham losing. Is he also an agent of SHIELD/HYDRA? Whatever, don't trust him to be a nice guy. Trust him to get the job done - no matter the cost.
Don't rate Grant Ward. Can't see him being a prem player, let alone for us.

Yes I'm not debating why they are ahead of us or that they should be so getting slightly away from (my) point; I don't believe going into a season without key signings is good, with the first fixture a prime example of one reason why not. Yes it happens to more than just us but, surely we've been identifying targets for some time if the deadwood were identified some time ago? We know they all were. Defensive deals were important and are done, I'm grateful for that but, would really like to see a quality midfielder before August.

Relying on Man Utd to not be ready is where you end up. As they're £millions, years of success, 4th place and a last game thrashing ahead of us already (when we were in great form), l worry a bit!

I still would!!!....that skill!!!!

Hang on, let me answer for some others to save people time...

'He's too old'
'He's too slow'
'He can't play Poch's pressing style'
'He fucked us over'
'I'd rather we give a hungry young striker a chance to develop'

yh being realistic is fine and trying to break into the top 4 is a realistic ambition if we aint gna try we might aswell go home n end up like newcastle. we need to set targets to keep on improving

yh and i correctly predicted harry kane will get in double figures last season n got laughed at but it dont mean anything.

i agree we need a striker we all do but its early days yet we'll see who becomes available n we will make our move im sure just have a bit of faith..
Hi Skippa, glad you agree being realistic is fine, that's what I try to be on this forum when it comes to assessing our prospects. Yes, breaking into the top 4 is a realistic ambition of ours, but with our current squad no way can I see that happening.

I tell you what though if Alli and Oduwa can break through this season, I might be a little more hopeful of that come December or thereabouts.

We've had top 4 as a target for years now, but we haven't kept on improving. Indeed, we've clearly gone backwards since we last made top 4.

I'm not interested in having a bit of faith when it comes to ENIC, or Poch for that matter, I'm no fan of either. What I want is results, a trophy or two primarily.

PS Well done on your Kane prediction. Like a lot of people I called it wrong with Harry, I never believed he had a season like that in him.

I'm not convinced he'll match that this season, in fact I think it's unlikely. Hence our urgent need for another striker.

Is he better than Mason? Did anyone watch him play all Everton's games last season or is this based on seeing him play in highlights or v us?
McCarthy does a job, the dirty work.
Mason doesn't do that job, he tries to do a bit of both he does well in my book
Of course McCarthy may be better at it holding. Mason has a better than him at other stuff.
How can anyone say McCarthy is an upgrade on Mason when he doesn't do the same job.
Is he an upgrade on Bentaleb, what's the answer there then?
He's no better than Mason in my book. If you go by how many tackles/interceptions he makes on average each game, he's not better than Mason.
Mason is in his first season and can pull out stats of 2.8 and 1.6 ( whilst not being a DM) McCarthy has only bettered that once in 8 yrs of EPL experience.
Is McCarthy better than Bentaleb then?
I just don't understand the hate everyone has for Mason. Selective memory. They forget all the good passes and tackles, movement and commitment and just remember when he was out of position.
Bentaleb fucked up a few times last season too I rememebr.
Nabil's not a DM, they say. We need to free him up. It's not his fault, it's all Masons. Disregarding the fact that Mason puts just as good a shift in defensively and he's not a DM either. He's a No10.
Mason could get better.
Didn't we try all Nabil/Stambouli. Capoue/Dembele Capoue/Nabil and we were not that good in central midfield? Thats' what you'll probably get if we put McCarthy alongside Bentaleb. What makes people think playing McCarthy alongside Bentaleb will free up Bentaleb to get forward, create and score goals like he's done all his playing days?
That game against a shit Newcastle side? He wasn't doing that when he was playing alongside Capoue or Stambouli at the start of the season.
Bentaleb has potential, let's not all start thinking he's the messiah and as soon as we get a proper DM who does not much else that he is going to do the Mason job 10 x better than Mason does.
Stop mugging Mason off, as he's done very well for his first ever season. Give him a chance ffs.

Let's hope Kane does not have a disappointing season eh.

As someone who as advocated a move for McCarthy since he was at Wigan, I will say that I have watched him an awful lot, and can't understand why he isn't wanted. This isn't a comment on Mason in any way, and certainly not 'hate' quite frankly.

Stats piss me off so much - football is not a game that lends itself to stats readily like cricket does, for example. Do stats tell you a players positional awareness? Do they tell you anything that isn't specific to the ball? Not really.

McCarthy, for example, is someone who will improve us as a team - and that is what we are after. The only problem I can really see is the inflated fee. Is there a better option? Maybe, I don't know too many of the names banded around from Europe, and if there is then I'm all for it.

I don't really remember Bentaleb playing alongside Capoue or Stambouli at the start of the season - did that happen?

I mentioned this before, it is a long season, and last year we ran certain players into the ground, Mason included, it makes no sense to not improve players and the squad.

Not sure why you have gotten the royal arsehole about it, to be honest.

I agree with this, the club should (and hopefully do) be investing into players to improve our midfield and attacking options considering the apparent plan to sell the deadwood that infests these areas of the squad.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how the window plays out, perhaps it's a case of waiting for other deals to happen before ours do, as is so often the case in the transfer window.

And their wages and signing on fees?

That's changing the goalposts mate!

Fact is we have paid for one of them so he's a yes.

Begovic from Stoke to Chelsea no 2, even we could've been in that ball park.

Remy we couldn't buy from Chelsea anyway I doubt. If you have one striker (pretty much everybody wants shot of at least one or both of Ade and Soldado) but you can't afford more than £9-10m for him then wages may have to be higher, needs must.

We can afford £100k a week if we have to. Get rid of Ade and it frees up more than that anyway!

Ok, Hernandez another option? Let me guess, we can't offer him starting XI so he won't come. Excuse after excuse so let's just keep Ade and Soldado then!!?

I saw somebody scoffing at Jelavic but I don't know what people expect. I'm in the camp that we could afford to go for bigger and better if we wanted....we won't for various reasons.

So, 'play hungry kids' who will love the shirt and give their all etc.

I'm all for giving them a chance and if good enough they're old enough but, we have Europa groups and Carling Cup for that, we should be aiming for as competitive as possible first XI for the league and then hopefully a superstar comes through and ADDS to that.

I have a nagging feeling about Poch. The whole kids thing is not his baby (excuse the pun), it's Southampton's, as they proved before and after him. Youngsters are easier for him to coach as they have lots of head-room for improvement which he can then take (be given) credit for when really they are just naturally improving from their current point of development. Most of the deadwood we had/have was never going to work but, I haven't seen him coax any improvement or find a role for a more experienced player yet. Maybe he can't coach or manage them? Maximise Dembele and I'm convinced, there's a £30m player there easily. Maybe nobody can do that but, flogging him and keeping Carrol will have me reeling big-time!

Anyway, if we're not rich enough or good enough for Higuain or Cavani, or Dzeko or Jovetic and can't buy/pay Remy/Chicarito, there's no Harry Kane mk2 ready to promote so.....Jelavic is our level it seems?
