Would you say our defence was addressed in the summer? Would you say it's stronger now? If so, how comes they looked as poor as they did last season?
The defence wasn't the only problem, mate.
Right, no I agree. Lets go do a 2013. Actually no, we could do better. Lets do a 2008.

Our business this summer had been exceptional. We will sign a central midfielder and we will sign a striker. People will still moan and no doubt hope the players fail to prove a point.

It's now down to Pochettino to get the best out of them. If we don't have someone who can coach a football team (which I feel we do) then what good are these signings? Defensively yesterday, first half especially we looked dreadful. But why? I was told Alderweireld would fix that? Point is, we could have had Maldini back there and we'd still have looked dodgy.
Nobody is calling for a 2013, but isn't it obvious that we've failed to address some of our problems? Do you actually believe that players, incapable of performing their roles last season, have magically improved over the summer?

i dont see why people think the youngsters will improve so much from a few months ago.
jesus, what have they been drinking this summer that makes u improve significantly.

if anything, our best youngster (kane) wont score as many.

cant see mason improving dramatically. i think he is close to his best. decent squad player but wouldnt want him as a main starter.

rose improved hugely last seaaon. cant see him doing another big improvement or else he would probably be the best LB in the world!

bentaleb i can see improving a bit with each season. going to be amazing in a few years. i got high hopes for him.

lamela? we seem split on that. some think he will explode this season & tear it up.
i think he is so unsuited for the premiership & will never fit in. id take 10-15m if we could get it.

townsend? think he will always blow hot & cold. hit & miss.

so out of curiosity. which youngsters or players frm last season do people think are going to inprove SIGNIFICANTLY this season?

& do u really think kane will score even more? i dont.

& yes i know in general with age they will all naturally improve slighlty anyway. but i mean significant improvements.

like im sure mason will be a tad more experienced in that position that isnt his favoured position. so he should be a bit positionally better at least. but i dont see him being significantly better.

i look foward to your significant replies.
i dont know if i mentioned significant yet?
I'm certain that Bentaleb will improve significantly and I see no reason why Mason would have hit his ceiling, being only 24.
I'm also sure that we will make more signings in the window.
It's not as if the other squads around us have made massive signings that will suddenly make them title contenders. Rodgers is a dickhead, who relied on Suarez to get them to second. Van Gaal is an egotistical idiot who will probably play Rooney at CDM and play De Gea up front if he stays.
Not every young player has to improve to the level that Kane has to play a significant role within a team. I think Alli is an absolute star, but not saying he's ready to start yet. A lot of our squad is under 25, so of course there is scope (and a lot of scope) for significant improvement.

But defence was a massive problem. We improved it without improving our defending. These things take time though.

We've not signed a midfielder or a striker yet. That's not failing to address our problems. It's acting slowly on sorting them out. Whether that's good or bad we will find out by the end of the window.

I'd much rather sign the right player then signing a defensive midfielder for the sake of it. Imagine in 2011 if we went and signed Joe Cole on a free instead of waiting and getting van der Vaart instead.

Watching that MLS game tonight, made me realize how many problems we've failed to address

I am delighted we lost. Normally we smash it in preseason. Remember Roma 5-0?

Get the right players for the right system and give them time to build an understanding. Results will follow. We need one or two players in, but wholesale change year after year has done us no favours. Need to think incrementally imo, not in terms of massive overhauls. It's not mechanical, We're dealing with players not lego (for a Danish example) so it takes some time to bond. I'd like to start to see us invest that time.

Would you like us to sign Di Maria ?
Because I think .
He might sign for Paris
Saint-Germain !
(mirrored your lovely Haiku structure so please appreciate it).

Don't tune in then mate. Peacefully protest the demon Levy. Facts are that we aren't going to spend massively after being burnt by the Bale money and have put in a new spending/transfer structure. Best get used to it.
why do people think if we want to get a decent signing in & spend we must mean di maria for 50m.

but well done on the 953th sarcastic naming of 1 of the most expensive signings we could get ( that no 1 expects us to get or spend on)

my go!
jesus, u want us to sign messi?
because i dont think we have a spare 300m for him.
& i think he loves barca btw xxx

Also think if you tweak everything all the time you can't tell which of your interventions has actually made a difference. That's why I like us being a bit more methodical with everything. Am confident we will do our best to rectify the squad's shortcomings with 1 or 2 signings. Anyone who has played the game will tell you much of it is about confidence. Many of these players will benefit from an extended run in the team and the sense that they will be given a prolonged opportunity to shine.

I'd like to see some quotes for that, and not just quotes saying he's a good player/prospect but actually ones that imply Wimmer will be 'tearing' it up.
i was over exaggerating like the people saying we arent going to spend a 100m+ when u suggest spending on a couple of decent players.

but actually if u look at the response to the wimmier signing it was quite cringing.
many people who have never seen him play said he is a good signing. i was suprised at all the positive comments from so many different people.
id bet ££ on there being more people saying he is a good signing then there are people who have watched him play.

Thank you for enjoying and appreciating my sarcastic and bitterly caustic, yet lighthearted and enigmatic comments.
Also 953th? What is 53th?
Wouldn't mind Messi thank you Scott, get it done.

Coaching a system is a lot more important then signings. Under Ramos when we signed Gomes, dos Santos, Modric etc we were considered top four contenders yet we famously suffered our worst start in years.

Same as under AVB with the famous 7 - with all those signings bought from the sale of one player, we were a shoe in for fourth... Nope.
we are considered top 4 contenders now....
but we arent.

Whats frustrating though is because we squandered a shit load of money 2 years ago ( even though all that money was recouped with outgoings) Levy seems to be using it as an excuse to throw in the towel.

so if u do really well in pre season it means u will be crap.
if u spend quite big then it means it will be the bale money signings all over again.

so from all the reading i have done on this forum...
the secret to success??
spend small & lose 5-0 to barnet in pre season.

Fifty-thirdth ... Scott has a lisp you bastard, we never mention it.
thank u for not mentioning it all this time.
i just starting believing it was all in my head & not real until big mouth webo pointed it out.
sort of guy who points out when u got a big spot on your face. u got a big spot he says. thanks a lot for pointing that out webo i say.
i was supposed to have typed 955, not 953. only 2 keys out. not bad

Yeah thought you'd made it up.

Struggle to see how that's more 'cringing' than writing him off before you've ever seen him play though. Must be miserable to follow a club where they can seemingly do nothing right.
