Whoever Infantino wants. Which, if you dig deep enough, will be whoever can grease his palm enough.

Gianni Infantino says they "won their last season game" & are "best team of America over a season" - completely overlooking upcoming playoffs & MLS Cup that MLS sees as the ultimate American title

No team is pulling out of this worried about player welfare. The players wont want to miss the bonuses either no matter what they say.

The prize money

While it might seem like another major commitment for the players after what will be another hectic season, the financial incentive for participating in the Club World Cup is certainly inarguable.
The total prize money is around €2.5bn and an initial €2bn will be distributed among the 32 teams that book their plane tickets to the USA. Qualification therefore brings €50m as a minimum, while there will be other results-based bonuses and the winner will receive around €100m.
This is money which would add to the prize funds obtained from a potential run in the Champions League. For example, reaching the last 16 is worth €9.6m to which must be added the proceeds from the results of the current group, the historical ranking and of course ticket sales.

What has the Federation of International Football Associations got to do with a club competition .
What authority do they have where clubs are concerned.
Latest news is that they have not secured the huge sponsorship they promised and no one has taken up the tv deal. Originally said that clubs would get 50-60m . Looking somewhat doubtful now.
With luck it will fall on its arse.

Its a bit late to get multiple big sponsors to commit hundreds of millions of dollars/pounds/euros to this event starting from zero.

And players unions and indeed multiple well known players (including Son) have expressed doubts over whether players can cope with another new major competition on top of recent expansions of international tournaments ...... and FIFA has yet to persuade the players to promote the tournament, not helped by the fact that FIFA have yet to make good on commitments made a year ago to establish a fund for players who went bust over last 3/4 years.

Despite FIFA trying to bend rules by saying Inter Miami are US champions (the US competitions end in a cup still to played) to get Messi to promote the tournament, its looking very very difficult for FIFA to get this tournament off the ground.

And for that we should all be grateful - next season 2025/26 would start with all players knackered and needing 3 or 4 weeks rest if this ill thought through joke of a tournament goes ahead.

FIFA has yet to get any sponsors, so these numbers (highlighted in bold) may be the plan but without raising the money - they'll be lucky to get their plane tickets to USA paid let alone anything else

The rot is already setting in.

LaLiga is still exploring plans to stage the league match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the United States just before Christmas.
Spanish top-flight sources first indicated a desire to take the match to Miami back in August and reports claim that the league remains keen to press ahead.

The game is scheduled for matchday 18, where all matches are currently set for December 22 ahead of television picks, but will require FIFA approval.

FIFA said in May it would set up a working group to look at a revised legal framework for taking domestic league matches overseas, but has not provided any public updates since.

fifa having to sue its major sponsors, adidas, coca cola et al, to persuade (force ?) them to sponsor the Club World Cup is not a business practice I've heard of before.

I wonder if 'fifa' and 'desperation' now fit neatly into any sentence describing how the Club World Cup preparations are going.

Going swimmingly isn't it? Players union is suing them and they have 1 sponsor announced. They need to read the room here I think.
