Champions League Qualification Question

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

So as far as I know the rules with regarding CL qualification are changing from next year on, in the sense that Europa League winners get a place and as an example, the top 4 in England get a place even if a team outside those 4 win the CL.

But as a hypothetical take this scenario:

Premier League 14/15
1. City
2. Chelsea
3. Woolwich
4. Everton
5. Liverpool (CL Winners)
6. Spurs (EL Winners)

There can hardly have 6 teams from England in the competition (or can there?) so who misses out in that situation, us or Everton?

everton.

Everton. But that only happens if a nation has 4 places (so England, Spain or Germany right now) and the Champions League and Europa League winners both come from that country AND finish outside the top 4. So pretty unlikely to say the least.

I was thinking the ELwould take preference over the league alright, any source just would like a gander myself?

Unlikely but Spursy

Wouldn't Everton and woolwich miss out?

Chelsea won the CL and it removed the 4th place qualification spot, so i'd assume the same would be applicable in the EL, meaning that the next league position would also miss out?

Nope, from next season if a team finishes outside the top 4 and wins one of the European competitions, their country simply gets 5 places the next year. So if we had a situation again where we came 4th but Chelsea came 6th and won the Champions League, we would both qualify.

As far as I know, they've changed the ruling so you can now have an extra place from the country who wins the CL if the winner is outside their allocation (poorly worded I know).
E.g. If the Chelsea incident was to happen next year, even tho we were fourth we'd still qualify.

This is why it's getting confusing

In my opinion it should be just top 4, CL winner doesn't automatically qualify and nor does EL winner. That way everyone knows with certainty what they need to do. Plus it means if chelsea pull the same bullshit they did a couple of seasons ago, they miss out

^^^^That's how it *used* to be, then the dippers won it, but they hadn't qualified top 4 so they had no entry, so Bliar stood up in parliament, and UEFA ....

Q: What are the Champions League rule changes?
A: From 2015-16, the Europa League winners and the Champions League winners will both qualify for the following season's Champions League.

Q: Will the maximum number of clubs from the top nations such as England in the Champions League remain at four clubs?
A: No, there will be a maximum of five clubs but only under special circumstances.

Q: When can a country have five clubs in the Champions League?
A: Only when a club wins the Champions League or Europa League but finishes outside the top four in the domestic league. That happened last season when Chelsea finished sixth in the Premier League but took the Champions League spot from Tottenham who finished fourth, because they were European champions.

Q: Will a country be able to have six clubs if both Champions League and Europa League winners come from the same nation and both finish outside of the top four?
A: No - five is the maximum. In that unlikely scenario, the European trophy winners would qualify plus the top three.

Q: If the Champions League or Europa League winners finish inside the top four of their domestic league, will that allow the runners-up to qualify?
A: No, only the winners.

Q: Will the Europa League winners go straight into the group phase of the Champions League?
A: That has still to be confirmed but it appears that will usually be the case.

Q: If the Champions League or Europa League winners also qualify via their domestic league, will that allow the fifth-placed club in the league to take the 'spare' qualification place?
A: No, in that scenario there would still only be four clubs qualifying.

I've bolded the Spursy scenario of us finishing 4th and still not qualifying.

So basically we would have qualified 2 years ago if this rule came in earlier
