Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara has recalled the time Robbie Keane floored new boy Edgar Davids with a punch in a training session.

Davids had joined the club from Inter Milan after successful spells with Barcelona, Juventus and Ajax and so was a prized signing by the Spurs fanbase. However, the Irish striker felt the need to put the Dutch international in his place shortly after he arrived in North London.

Keane was a respected and feared figure in the Spurs dressing room, and O'Hara described the time Davids found that out the hard way.

'I tell you who had a bit about him – Robbie Keane,' O'Hara explained to TalkSport. 'I remember a story with him and Edgar Davids.

'We were at training and Davids came in from Inter Milan and he thought he was the bee's knees. He thought he was the guy and the main man and everything, but everyone realised Robbie Keane was the main guy at Tottenham at that time.'

The defensive midfielder joined on a free transfer from the Serie A side after his contract was terminated after the first year of his three-year deal.

The abrasive Dutchman was often renowned for his hard tackling and work ethic, and that ended up getting him into a 'barney' with Keane that didn't end well.

'I remember him giving it to Keano in training and they were having a barney, and I think he tried to step to Robbie Keane and say something – and Keano just sparked him, bosh!'

'He just went, bang – one punch. Gone. Then Davids has just picked himself up and walked off – and that was it. He came in the next day like, 'morning, Robbie…'

'Everyone knew – you don't mess with Keano. He had that thing about him that if he switched he would put you straight out.'

Davids spent one-and-a-half seasons at Tottenham before returning to his boyhood club Ajax in 2007.

He later went on to return to England as he joined Crystal Palace, then in the Championship, on a pay-as-you-play deal. He lasted just three months at Selhurst Park before pursuing coaching.

Zinedine Zidane: “At Juventus, Edgar Davids wanted us to play in the neighborhoods. I would tell him that we trained every day and that we couldn't go and play with young people on the streets.

So he would tell me 'You've changed! You don't remember where you lived and what you used to do.’

So, once or twice, I went with him. But he did it very often. It was impressive because we had fun, but it was also crazy to go, after training, to play on the tarmac with young people. He did it very, very often.”
