Dejan Kulusevski told Spurs coach Gianni Vio he deserves pay rise amid Harry Kane praise

Tottenham's attacking set piece coach is making an impression on the squad and the results are there for all to see on the football pitch

Tottenham's new set piece coach Gianni Vio is making such an impression on the players that Dejan Kulusevski told him three times on Saturday that he deserves a pay rise and Harry Kane has also praised the Italian.

The former Italy, AC Milan, Leeds and Brentford coach was brought in by Antonio Conte this summer to vastly improve the club's set piece options. Vio has designed 4,830 different attacking set piece scenarios which he adapts to the players at his disposal and he was lauded at Euro 2020 for his impact as Italy won the tournament.

Spurs scored just eight league goals from set-pieces last season, which was only five more than relegated Norwich, who scored the least, and 13 fewer than champions Manchester City, who scored the most.

It's no coincidence that since Vio's arrival in north London, Tottenham have already scored from two set pieces in their first three games. Kane scored in the 96th minute from Ivan Perisic's corner at Chelsea and then the striker nodded home from Perisic's flick-on from Son's corner against Wolves on Saturday. Eric Dier also scored from the second phase of a set piece against Southampton in the opening match of the season thanks to his positioning.

Vio has been working closely with the squad ahead of matches since pre-season and Kane praised his influence on the team.

"We’ve been working on them in training. We see it as a real opportunity to break the deadlock in games. We know how important set-pieces can be in tight games especially. Two in two now, hopefully we can keep it up," he said. "We’ve had plenty of time, we've had one game a week for the last three weeks now, so probably leading up to two days before the game, a couple of days looking at what the opposition do, looking at how we can exploit that. We have Gianni helping us, for sure the gaffer is involved, all the staff are involved as well. So far so good, but we’ve got to keep it going."

Spurs winger Kulusevski admitted after the latest set piece brought the match-winning goal against Wolves he told Vio that Tottenham needed to pay him more.

"I just told him three times that we have to give him more money. He has to get a pay rise for sure! Shout-out to him," said the Swede. "He's very important. He makes a difference, like you can see. At the end of the day, we won on a set piece today so we have to keep working on that. It's not the most fun thing in the world but it gets results.

"It helps a lot. Three games, three goals [from set pieces] I think, so we have to keep listening to him and do what he says. I don't remember that we scored so many [from set pieces] last season but it's very important. Now we have to get better. Every time we get a set piece we have to believe we can score."

It’s a wonder to me that these giant megacorp football clubs who spunk £50m on players and are happy to dole out millions in weekly wages never stopped to consider that a measly £150k per year on a specialist like Vio could significantly help them. Don’t understand how a) every club doesn’t have one and b) why it took so long for us to find a dedicated set piece specialist given our struggles.

but either way it’s excellent news. Guy is magic.

Harry Kane reveals the new Tottenham tactics teams can’t seem to cope with

Tottenham have found a new way of scoring and breaking down teams when the game is tight.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has revealed he and his teammates are spending time analysing weaknesses of opponents and drawing up set piece structures to catch out teams.
The English striker scored from an Ivan Perisic delivery late in the game against Chelsea to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat at Stamford Bridge.

He repeated the trick against Wolves, this time benefiting from a flick from the wing-back, half way through the game to ensure Spurs picked three points at home and continue their impressive start to the season.

The Lillywhites have now scored two set piece goals in the first three games of the season and have picked up four points as a direct consequence from corner kicks.

Gianno Vio, the man described in Italy as the ‘secret weapon’ during Italy’s Euro 2020 success at Wembley was appointed in June to improve Tottenham’s set piece structure and his impact has already been felt throughout the first team.

Last season Spurs scored just eight goals from set-pieces, and conceded 10 but since the appointment of the new set piece coach, they have scored two from their first three games and conceded that just Kalidou Koulibaly volley against Chelsea.

Kane says there is no downplaying his impact and his arrival has given the team a new dimension to attacking opponents.
He said: “We’ve been working on them in training. We see it as a real opportunity to break the deadlock in games.
“We know how important set-pieces can be in tight games especially. Two in two now, hopefully we can keep it up.”
Kane’s teammate Dejan Kulusevski says Gianno Vio deserves a pay rise having coached the team to pick up important points already.

The Spurs man said: “I just told him three times that we have to give him more money. He has to get a pay rise for sure! Shoutout to him.

“He’s very important. He makes a difference, like you can see. At the end of the day, we won on a set piece today so we have to keep working on that.
“ It’s not the funnest thing in the world but it produces results. It helps a lot. Three games, three goals [from set pieces] I think, so we have to keep listening to him and do what he says.”
“I don’t remember that we scored so many [from set pieces] last season but it’s very important. Now we have to get better. Every time we get a set piece we have to believe we can score.”

It's a great idea and something we should have done ages ago

Fergie brought one in at United I remember there being an interview where it was claimed it was an extra 15 goals a season. That's like having another striker in the team

We have gained 4 points from the move already this season so long may it continue

Many clubs give away millions to commissions from players' agents whose sole merit is to have created a transfer mafia.
The competences, on the other hand, are considered as “minor”. Absurd

Saddest for me, is when we had Poch, those two seasons we strangled teams to footballing death, and, had one of the best dead ball players in the world (Eriksen), yet we were rubbish at set pieces. With this guy we would have won the league, IMO, maybe twice!

hopefully the team have spent saturday working on free kick's
here's a few idea's stop Kane taking direct kicks, get Son to pass the ball down the line instand of whipping it into the box direct
