Happy Birthday Bill Nicholson

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Bill would've been 95 today. He deserves his own thread.

"When it is played at its best football remains the greatest game of all. And Tottenham, so close to my heart, is still to me the greatest club."

"It's magnificent to be in Europe, and this club - a club like Tottenham Hotspur - if we're not in Europe.... we're nothing. we're nothing."

The man is Tottenham Hotspur, this is his club, he built it and gave us a footballing ethos that even to this day we still try to pride ourselves on while staying to this ethos, The man was a true inspiration and any tottenham fan should know who he is and have a picture of the old geezer, Have a happy birthday Mr Bill Nicholson up in a better place, you personified everything i love about Tottenham Hotspur football club

"We must always consider our supporters, for without them there would be no professional football. It would be better to have more fans watching football the way they like it played, rather than have a few fans watching football the way we would like it played."

"The public can't be kidded. They know what they want to see, what is good and what is bad and what is just average. At least I believe they do."

"There's no use being satisfied when things are done wrongly. I want perfection."

"It's no use just winning, we've got to win well."

He is the epitomy of THFC

I hope that when the new stadium is built we name a stand after him. Sad to ask this question, but would the naming rights sponsor allow this?

My grandad always spoke about the man to me, and told me he was "Mr Tottenham"..

Although Bill Nick had a dour reputation when he was a manager, his teams were anything but. I had the honour of meeting him a couple of times, he was very approachable and I loved the fact that he and his wife stayed in the Tottenham area. That's one thing we have to thank Irving Scholar for, bringing him back to the club, where he was rightly recognised as being the architect of the best Tottenham side we will ever see. He attended games right to the end, and I thought the memorial service at WHL was a fitting and moving tribute to a great man. How he was never knighted, I will never know.
PS One of my treasured possessions is a photo of me with Bill and Martin Chivers, heart rendering how they became best of friends in later life, considering the difficulties they encountered in their professional relationship.

Wonderful! 35 years ago when I was 18 I had the privilege of having a one to one, 15+ minute conversation with this great man, in his office at the Lane! I shall never forget this privilege an the fantastic impression this Gentleman (in every sense of the word) had on me!

Rest in peace Sir!

Legendary Spurs manager Bill Nicholson is remembered as a dour Yorkshireman but a new biography appears certain to change all that.

Included are author Norman Giller's memories of a mission to cover Tottenham in Split in 1967, where Bill Nick was persuaded to watch the hotel entertainment - "an erotic dance by a stripper with an 80-inch bust. What she did with a length of knotted rope defied belief.

“Bill and his assistant Eddie Baily watched the strip act wide-eyed and Bill's verdict had us in fits. He said: ‘I think she could do a better job in the middle of our defence than Mike England! She would be able to chest the ball down.’ ”

I have a signed copy of his autobiography which was published in the 80s I think - no mention of this though! However he had a keen sense of humour and could match Shankley with his one-liners and anecdotes.

Do you think he'd be pissed that Sherwood's beaten (or equalled??) his consecutive away win record? :sherwoodlol:

I'd like to think he'd be the bigger man about it, and congratulate Timmyyyyyyy!!

After all, Big Chiv was more than magnanimous in handing his European Goalscoring title over to Defoe this season... and i'm pretty sure he (and most us us) knows who the better striker was overall!!
:defoe:

So much of our current support is either fans from his era or their kids or grandkids. The first Spurs team I properly followed was the Chivers/Peters one 1970 onwards. I can still do the whole team off by heart in seconds. Felt so chuffed in the West Germany match that our 2 goals that would guarantee our win were Mullery and Peters.

My 3 kids are all Spurs, and theirs will be too. Probably ought to get a job lot of Spurs babygrows in the Jan sales to be properly prepared.

I really hope he is mentioned in the new ground in some capacity as I’m concerned that his legacy will be forgotten.

I remember listening to a bunch of Leary young-uns in the beehive last season, they had an older chap with them who mentioned Bill Nicholson and they all looked lost and said “who” I felt like cryin. Then one of them said “ah that’s the name of the road outside the ground”

His memory must be with us forever and everyone needs to be reminded who is was.
