John Fashanu on brother Justin: ‘He was my shining light. He became my arch enemy’

Would be interested to see the documentary.

His playing career was before my memories really. Sounds like a guy fighting against everything his whole life, and in the end even his brother John (who hardly coats himself in glory in this piece).

Clough also treated him poorly in an era where tolerance was completely different (although in football I guess the gay area hasnt moved on much)
To be fair to Clough he did say his reaction to Justin Fashanu was one of his biggest regrets.

Scored an amazing goal against the Dippers as I recall but celebrations by his team mates a bit muted
 
John Fashanu is a cunt. You should check out the documentary that his daughter did on Justin and in it you can see he was basically still homophobic even up to a few years ago. I have little doubt that he contributed significantly to the isolation his brother faced and possibly even his eventual demise through the mental problems he faced. I must admit I am suspect that he has truly now decided to accept his brother's sexuality.
 
The wiki site says that in 2012 John had told Talksport that Justin was not gay and merely an attention seeker, if true, I think that supports what others have said about John....

However a counterbalance to this shows Justin was complex to say the least (and perhaps an attention seeker/an opportunist too) Profile: The striker who didn't score: Justin Fashanu, dribbling round

It's probably still so interesting due to the fact there are no 'out' players in the domestic game and this story probably weighs heavy on any current footballer who wants to come out. Also we are talking about someone who is a particularly damaged character, there a few aspects to this story and it's not just the footballing story that makes you wonder.

The Documentry I saw was following John fashanus"s daughter about racism I think? Plus the homophobia side! They interviewed the former Notts Forrest player Jonh McGovern and it was cringey he didn't come across in a good light at all! But Justin give him is due came up to Scotland and played for hearts and airdrie now they two clubs are no for the faint hearted!

Fashanu did one of the long "My Sporting Life" interviews with Danny Kelly, he must have talked about it on that.

The gaff he was in beforehand across the road is closed now. Chariots Roman spa. Right grubby, seedy place. Had some faux Greco type statues outside I remember.

John is mental. The documentary on the Crazy Gang that BT Sport did cemented that for me - 100% delusional thug with an attitude problem.
