aside from being able to guess at what went on between Summer 2008 and January 2010, I have never seen any substance as to why the following happened…

1) Keane moved to Liverpool, and 6 months later comes back at a huge discount. Why?

His Liverpool spell was not that bad and with Defoe also coming back, Tottenham’s need for a new striker didn’t demand we busted a gut for Keane.

Perhaps it was for family reasons or did the Spanish waiter not like his pointing and shouting ? Was it just one of them things, anyone know ?

2. January 2010. He’s bombed out to Celtic on a loan. Of course he went waving the boyhood fan flag again, and after that loan he never really came back as a proper player for us. I remember no one gave a shit when he was loaned out. And the he was loaned to fucking West Ham the next season, which is frankly awful and he ends up on a free a year later (I think). Hardly a great £12m investment.

His loan to Celtic came about just weeks after he took the squad over to Dublin for a piss up behind Harry’s back. Was that why he got bombed out so badly ? I have always assumed it was this that saw him gone, but maybe it’s a coincidence and he had gone over the hill ? And Redknapp has always been really positive about Keane…

His first spell with us was pretty great. I feel he ruined his fan relationship forever by forcing a move when Berbatov was also on the way out. But then did they both hate Ramos, which I have heard was the case…

Any views ?

Liverpool fans thought he was shit and pretty sure their manager did as well. I suspect the whole thing amounted to a costly loan for Liverpool we probably wrote off the rest of their payments for him. I always felt a bit sorry for Keane as Harry absolutely loved Defoe and there wasn’t room for both of them. I remember we destroyed hull 5-1 with them both playing and we looked fantastic.

Completely forgot about the West ham thing.

I seem to recall at Liverpool he was a 'club signing' and not really wanted by the manager in the first place.

He came back to Spurs saying Liverpool may have been his boyhood club but he and his family wouldn't forget how they'd treated him, and Tottenham is the club he owes his loyalty to.

The pub debates about playing both Keane and JD were endless. Happy days though. Those two really bring up a lot of nostalgia.

Was a legend.
Then fucked it up.
I loved him at Spurs but now he doesn't even cross my mind when the question of 'Spurs best strikers' comes up.
He really should though, I'm probably doing him a disservice.

As soon as he left for Liverpool I lost all respect for him. Didn't welcome him back either.
This! I lose all feeling for players once they want to move on. I know that 99.9% players are in it for the money and the glory and they don't view the Club as we do, but illogically, I still feel it as a snub.
At the time, him going was a bombshell and so unexpected, at least from supporters' POV (we really don't have a clue what goes on behind the scenes, especially in pre-social media days).

I didn’t rate him. He was a talented, playground footballer - instinctive finisher but shit when he had time to make a decision. Repeatedly made decisions that wouldn’t be allowed in the semi pro game

Keane left Spurs 13 years ago. Why have you created this topic now?

Seems a bit harsh. Him and Defoe both had weaknesses, but they both had a decent goals to games ratio - about the same as each other and not far off Berbatov's.

Benitez didn't want him and he made the board know it.

Should never have returned here though. Always seemed like he wanted out. At least with Defoe, he seemed to genuinely adore the club and never wanted to leave in the first place.

Yeah bit annoyed me tbh - neither were useless by any means but they were so limited

Think i was just angry Levy sold Kanoute who was mile better than both and would have been unstoppable with Berba

The best way to train a goal keeper is to make him save tennis balls hit by tennis racket from just outside the box and very hard.

Yeh i preferred Kanoute as well but didn't really get a proper chance here. Sold to Sevilla and then proceeded to become one of the best strikers at the time.

Yeah - didn’t get enough goals at Spurs but was always second fiddle. Absolutely class, complete handful, good touch would have been incredible with Berba
