Three Of The Most Memorable Goals That Spurs Have Netted In The Prem
Until recently, Spurs have struggled manfully in the EPL era, both in terms of maintaining a consistent league position and their obvious lack of success in cup tournaments.
Even allowing for the club’s seismic improvements under Argentine boss Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs are still without silverware since their League Cup triumph in 2008, with last season’s Champions League defeat the latest in a long line of narrow misses.
Despite this, Spurs have provided some great entertainment over the course of the last 27 years. Here, we look back at three of the best EPL goals that the club has netted during this time:
- Gareth Bale v Norwich City – January 30th, 2013
In truth, Welsh wizard Gareth Bale could have dominated this article, with his incredible acceleration and long-distance shooting ability having established him as a cult favourite amongst fans before his departure for Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.
One of his best goals came against Norwich City at Carrow Road during his final year with the club, with Spurs trailing the Canaries by a single goal well into the second half.
After receiving a lay-off from striker Jermaine Defoe in the centre-circle, Bale put on the after-burners to accelerate into space and race to the edge of the Norwich box. Then, he bamboozled full-back Javier Garrido with a high-speed step-over, before caressing the ball into the next with the outside of his left foot.
- Stephen Carr v Manchester United – October 23rd, 1999
If you were ever going to back the next goal scorer, former Spurs full-back Stephen Carr would be unlikely to be a popular choice across weekend accumulator tips websites.
However, the Irish defender did manage to score one of Spurs’ greatest EPL goals in the autumn of 1999, to cap a superb 3-1 win at White Hart Lane against the defending EPL and UCL champions.
Spurs were already 2-1 up when Carr received the ball in an advanced position on the right flank, but rather than crossing for striker Steffen Iversen he surged forward and cut infield towards the penalty area.
Suddenly, he unleashed a swerving, 25-yard shot from the outside of his right foot, with the ball flying across the United keeper before nestling in the far corner.
- Harry Kane v Arsenal – March 5th, 2016
Whilst Harry Kane is well on the way to becoming Spurs’ greatest ever goal scorer, he remains synonymous with tap-ins and predatory efforts rather than long-range screamers.
However, the English striker bucked this trend in March 2016, as he collected the ball on the left-flank before dribbling inside. Having reached the left corner of the penalty area, he produced a dipping, curling effort which beat the keeper’s dive and nestled perfectly in the top corner.
This gave Spurs a narrow 2-1 lead over arch-rivals Arsenal, although the Gunners were able to pinch a point thanks to a late Alexis Sanchez goal.
