As we cross over to 2020, only ten points separate fourth-place Chelsea and twelfth placed Burnley. You could argue ten points are too many to recover with about 18 game weeks to go. But then again Man City came from 12 points down in February and won the 2018/19 championship.

Liverpool, Leicester and Man City are the only teams showing the consistently required to finish in the top four firmly. But as we’ll outline below, no one is safe.

Champions: Liverpool vs Leicester

Leicester can’t lift the PL for a second time, can they? It all depends on how Liverpool performs in the second half of the season. The reds are ten points above the foxes after 17 game weeks and deservedly so.

They are yet to lose a game in the premier league, grabbing 49 out of a possible 51 points. They’ve hit the net 41 times in that period, conceding only 14 points. By comparison, Leicester have already lost twice, but they’ve only conceded 11 goals.

If Leicester slips up, however, their chances of catching up with Liverpool will be close to nil. The Citizens are placed third, with only four points behind the Foxes and 14 points off the first position.

Fixtures’ wise, Liverpool have a reasonably tough series of games until February. They have Leicester, Tottenham, Man United, and Wolves in their schedule before February. By comparison, City and the foxes have relatively easy fixtures in the same period.

If Liverpool cruises past January undefeated, the PL trophy will be theirs lose. Most bookmakers are already tipping them to win at this stage of the tournament, anyway. Visit your favourite bookie site to find out the odds of backing the reds to lift the premier league.

The Top Four

Unless Liverpool suffers an injury crisis of Biblical proportions, they have a spot in the top four. You could say the same about Leicester and Man City, but Chelsea’s place isn’t guaranteed. After defeating Crystal palace 2-0 in early November, they’ve been shockingly inconsistent.

Lampard’s men lost to West Ham, beat Aston villa on Dec fourth but lost to Everton and Bournemouth back to back. Truth be told, the blues have a significant number of injury concerns. Jorginho, Giroud, Tomori and Barkley all have a few weeks before they get back to the starting line.

Spurs are only six points behind the blues despite the poor run of form in the days before Pochetino left. With Jose Mourinho in control, we’ve been doing remarkably well. If we continue in the same direction, there’s a significant chance of finishing in the top four.

Unfortunately, Man United, Sheffield, Wolves Crystal Palace and even Arsenal could end up finishing fourth. Well, only three points separate Spurs with eight placed Wolves.  Worse, the gunners are just four points behind us, meaning a change of fortunes could see them rise from tenth place to top four in a few weeks.

The January Transfer Factor

How teams finish the season will be grossly affected by how they perform at the transfer window. Chelsea could invest in a couple of quality defenders now that their transfer ban was recently halved. Pep Guardiola will probably get the money he needs to strengthen his defence.

There are rumours Man United have already agreed to sign RB Salzburg’s sensational striker Erling Haaland. Liverpool, on the other end, have already signed Haaland’s teammate Takumi Minamino. Arsenal will also need to revamp their defense line and buy more midfielders to become a complete team.

Depending on which players mid-table teams also buy in the transfer period, the second half of the PL could become exceedingly competitive. Of course, every Spurs fan hopes Jose gets the money he needs to strengthen his squad enough to fight for the top four.

The Battle of the Mid-table

All teams in the upper half of the EPL log have a chance at the top four. But many of them could also end the season a few points off the relegation zone. Take Everton: positioned at number 16 with 18 points, they have almost no chance of competing for a place in European football.

After beating Chelsea 3-1 and drawing Man United away, however, they could genuinely end up in the top ten. They’ll need a drastic change of fortunes to get things around. But they have the opportunity. Brighton, Bournemouth and West Ham ranked 13, 14 and 15 consecutively, could also clinch spots in the top ten.

Although the three teams are performing poorly, they’ve regularly upset some of the top six. Bournemouth, for example, beat Chelsea at home two weeks into December. Brighton defeated Arsenal in the same period while West Ham have downed both Man United and Chelsea this season.

In the upper half of the log, Sheffield, Wolves and Crystal Palace could easily be pushed downward if they continue being inconsistent. Sheffield, which started the season excellently, have only won twice since October. Wolves have been comparatively persistent, but the next 18 game weeks will genuinely test their endurance.

The Relegation Zone

Watford have enjoyed the beauty of premier league football for close to four years since their promotion in 2015. But with only nine points in seventeen matches, nothing can save the Hornets from going down to the Championship next season.

They could change their manager every month, try new ideas or park the bus in all remaining games. But there’s no hope for them. Norwich, ranked 19th, has a chance at avoiding relegation, though. The Canaries are six points off the danger zone.

And having defeating Man City held Leicester to a draw and beat Everton away, it’s shocking they rank so low. Fair to them, they’ve had too many injuries. But for a team that defeated the Citizens with ten injuries, they can genuinely save themselves from relegation if they want to. That leaves Aston Villa and Southampton as the other two teams like to get relegated this season.
