Fixing Tottenham

Looking through the Tottenham team you have to wonder which players will survive a potential cull when the new manager is finally appointed, at some point in the summer. When Jose Mourinho took the helm at Spurs, his directive was to get one last massive effort out of the squad he inherited. I know it’s easy right now to suggest that this was cursed and half the players need to be booted but Mourinho did not help himself, alienating talent and containing expression. Regardless of this epic misadventure, it’s safe to say that Tottenham are still in need of a cull. One that will involve a heavy heart and the removal of sentiment.

Regarding the Amazon documentary, another isn’t on the cards, which is probably a blessing but at least I have live stream Betfair to distract me whilst Spurs go about their business in a more private manner this time round.

If All or Nothing provided us with drama I’d love to watch what happens next when the new man takes responsibility of removing the deadwood and upgrading those that are simply not good enough for the fight ahead.

I have no idea what I want exactly, in terms of a new appointment. This article isn’t so much about the person but more about the headline ethic the club should lead with. We can’t simply ask for the new man to inherit a broken squad twice over. We need to start over. Perhaps retain key players in key positions and then flesh out the rest over the next year or two.

Harry Kane, Son, Hugo, Ndombele and perhaps Dele, Toby and Reg (if he doesn’t go back to Madrid). I’d grab Bale for another season two. I’d give Højbjerg a chance to truly shine with consistency rather than bury him in pressure. We haven’t given the lad a break and we’ve run him into the ground. Dele and Bale have had the shackles removed and it’s obvious we wasted their capacity to create through out a season where we sat dwelling in the void of the low-block.

The new man has to be brutal with decision making, see the players that need a fresh start elsewhere and send them on their way, give them a new lease of life. Perhaps one or two can be saved. Let’s not forget Mauricio Pochettino turned Danny Rose into an elite left-back. Always be prepared to be surprised.

So onwards. We wait for the summer and we wait not for another band-aid to wrap around a cut. We need surgery this time to stop the internal bleeding. Operation Fix Tottenham is a go.
