The Spurs Players To Watch at Euro 2020

Tottenham have a long list of excellent players in their squad, so it’s no surprise that there are more than a few Spurs players performing for their nations at the Euro 2020 Championship. In total, there will be eight Lilywhite players aiming for glory this summer. Of course, not every Spurs representative will receive too many minutes on the pitch, but there are a handful who will function as key players for their sides. Gareth Bale, for example, has already shown how instrumental he’ll be if Wales are going to repeat their heroics of Euro 2016. And Harry Kane is England’s leading light. These two players are so important that they heavily influence their respective country’s Euro 2020 match odds while other players, such as Moussa Sissoko, will have more of an auxiliary role. Not that he’ll care too much.

OK, enough preamble — let’s look at which Spurs players you can expect to see at the Euros.

Harry Kane

Tottenham’s best player also happens to be England’s most important player. The Euros haven’t been all that kind to Harry Kane just yet, who is experiencing a bit of a drought in front of goal. But will he step up and perform for his country? Of course he will. Kane has been slow to perform in the past, but he always comes up with the goods. It’s always worth remembering that Kane offers more than just goals. He’s an excellent link-up player and leads the line well.

Of course, as a striker, he has to step up and score a few goals at some point. But it’s no great tragedy to have a couple of goalless games at the beginning of a tournament. What matters most is how many goals he has come July 11. If he ends up winning the tournament for England with a decisive goal at Wembley, you can expect that no-one will remember his lack of goals in the group stages of the match!

Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale is by far and away the best player in the Wales team. In fact, he might be one of the best players that Wales has ever had. And it’s true that Bale does seem a little more motivated when he’s playing for his national side, especially when compared to his Real Madrid days, when apathy seemed to be the stick with which the critics beat him. Wales are looking pretty good in this tournament, so don’t be surprised if they make it to at least the quarter-final. Bale has not set the tournament on fire yet, but as with Kane, his lack of goals isn’t overly important. The thing about Bale is that he is able to elevate his Welsh teammates when they need it. 

Moussa Sissoko

Sissoko isn’t the most important player in the France squad, but that’s no insult since the France team is stacked with excellent players. It’s no shame to be in the second string of a side that looks to be one of the favourites for the tournament. And in any case, it’s not as if Sissoko will spend all of his time on the bench. He’ll come on late in the game when his team needs a tenacious defensive outlet. 

Of all the Spurs outfield players that might end with a winners medal, none are as likely as Sissoko. France haven’t been electrifying at the Euro tournament just yet, but you don’t need to be at the group stage. You just need to do enough, which is what they’re doing at the moment. They’ll likely step up and show more of their quality as the tournament goes on. 

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

Spurs normally have a representative in the Danish squad every major tournament, and this year’s tournament is no different. Højbjerg has performed extremely well for Tottenham this year, and he’ll be among the leading Danish players. You have to be pretty special to play every minute of a league campaign for a Premier League club, yet that’s just what Højbjerg did for Spurs! So he’ll be an important figure for Denmark. Of course, no one’s expecting them to get anywhere close to the final, but you can rest assured that they’re going to do themselves proud. 

Toby Alderweireld

Toby Alderweireld is another Spurs player that can have some sights on lifting the trophy. Belgium have long threatened to do something major on the international scene. Could this be their year? If their golden generation is going to do anything, you’d say now is the best time, especially with De Bruyne and Lukaku in the form of their lives. They’ll need the ever-reliable Toby Alderweireld to keep clean sheets for them. His partnership with Jan Vertongen will be key to their success.

Hugo Lloris

Lloris always proves that he’s one of the world’s best keepers, and we should expect that he’ll do that again at this year’s tournament. In big competitions like this, keepers always play a massive role at the latter stages of the competition. If France are going to lift the cup, then they might just need their number one goalkeeper to save a penalty at some point or another. 

As well as his footballing skills, Lloris also takes his role as a senior player seriously. Experience counts for a lot in tournaments, and as a World Cup winner, Lloris has more experience than most!

Joe Roden

Though Roden doesn’t play all that much for Spurs, the Welsh national team know enough about him to get him in the starting eleven. It’ll be a great learning experience for Roden, who will be hoping for more minutes next year.

Ben Davies

Ben Davies didn’t have a great year at Spurs, but he’ll be starting for Wales. His tenacity and passion to win will be key if Wales are going to have a run like the one they had at Euro 2016. 

Let’s hope that all the Spurs players do the business for their country, and that none of them come back to Spurs injured. We’ll need them if we’re to have a better run at the title next year!
