How Seriously Should Spurs Take the Europa Conference League?
The Europa Conference League was launched this season, and if we are being honest, it is not really designed for teams such as Tottenham. This new third tier of European competition is designed for clubs from smaller nations, or small clubs from big nations to give them a taste of European football.
However, Tottenham find themselves in it, and also find themselves towards the head of the betting market to win it. This isn’t guaranteed to stay the same, as clubs will enter the Europa Conference League from the Europa League, but right now, those using football betting new customer offers will see Tottenham to win the competition as an interesting proposition.
The key question may be how seriously Spurs are going to take this competition? We’ve already seen them rest players in it, but will that change as they move into the later rounds?
What are the Aims This Season?
Spurs need to have a look at their aims for the season and ensure they are realistic. Is it realistic for them to finish in the top four in the Premier League, and get into the Champions League? Probably not, considering last season took a final day victory to claim a spot in the Europa Conference League.
If the club are not going to realistically challenge for the top four, then their next aim has to be to try and win a cup competition of any kind, while also qualifying for the Europa League, the second European tier.
Of the competitions they are going to compete in this season, the Europa Conference can complete two tasks, by brining silverware to the club and also giving a guaranteed Europa League spot for next season. When you look at the teams in it, you would also have to argue that it is the easiest option for Spurs, and a golden opportunity that they should seriously be looking to take advantage of.
The Easiest Passage to the Europa League?
Based on league performances so far, potential opponents as they go through the rounds of cup competitions and more, the easiest passage for Tottenham into the Europa League next season looks likely to be the Europa Conference League.
Spurs should be good enough to finish inside the top six this season and claim a position through their league position but given how the season has started that may now not happen. Harry Kane has declared his intention to stay at Tottenham, but this is clearly something that has affected him and the rest of the team in a big way.
That may make fighting with the likes of Leicester, West Ham and Everton, a little harder than it should be. However, compare that to their likely opponents in the Europa Conference League, even when the third placed Europa League teams enter, and things look easier.
The top four of the Premier League seems too far away at the moment, for Spurs, the Europa League and silverware should be a priority, and the Europa Conference League looks the easiest option to get both.
