10 Best Players In Tottenham Hotspur History
The Tottenham Hotspurs team has had some outstanding players in their time. The team doesn’t have the same glitz and glamor of Manchester or the community gathering history of Liverpool, but they do have a level of sophistication and grace unmatched by any other team.
Throughout their history 78 Tottenham players have played for their national team and each of them had an immense impact on the World Cup odds.
It’s time for us to shed some light on these unsung heroes, and remind everyone just how fantastic these players were.
- Dave McKay – Midfielder
McKay played for the Tottenham Hotspurs for 9 years of his career. In those 9 years, he made 318 appearances, and every single one of them came with the no-nonsense attitude of a serious player.
McKay was a tough tackler but would be precise enough to keep within the rules, allowing his team to carry on toward the goals they needed to succeed.
Some people might question our choice to put him in the number one spot, but McKay developed a gentlemanly and serious personality which players continue to this day.
Personality aside, McKay was the most adaptable person on the field. He could control the ball to his heart’s content, either preventing attackers or enforcing his own will.
Despite breaking his legs twice, McKay achieved 7 medals in his 9 years, proving just how integral he was to the team.
- Danny Blanchflower – Midfielder
Blanchflower was also known as the King of the Lane, in the 60s. He played for the Spurs for more than a decade and earned this title by always toeing the line.
Blanchflower was the captain and was brought into the team for a whopping £30,000. In 1964, that would have translated to $575,006.22. Although that number might seem low for footballers now, it was a massive amount of money in the 60s.
In his time with the team, Tottenham won their first league game and continued to win 10 more. Under his wing, Spurs also earned their first F.A Cup and did so by an outstanding 8-point lead!
- Jimmy Greaves – Striker
Greaves was almost the first ever 6 figure salary soccer player in the world. In 1961, Greaves was awarded £99,999 even though he could have been given more. Both Hotspurs and the League themselves wanted to avoid the financial pressure of players with high salaries.
Still, Greaves deserved that pay increase, as he scored 266 goals in his 379 appearances with the Spurs. Greaves also played for England, and during his 57 games for the nation, he managed to score 44 goals.
- Glenn Hoodle – Midfielder
We are entering out of the black-and-white era of football with Hoodle now on our list. He played for the Spurs between 1975 and 1987, and in that time Hoodle scored 110 goals out of his 490 games.
He managed to win the FA Cup twice and the UEFA Cup once.
- Cliff Jones – Left Wing
Cliff Jones was a Welsh player and his impressive record of 159 goals in 378 appearances made him a legend from all angles. As a wing player, being able to make a striker jealous through your scoring stat sheet is an accomplishment in itself.
- Martin Chivers – Striker
Although Chivers was an outstanding player in his time, many people forget about this legendary striker. Chivers played between 1968 and 1976, scoring 118 goals in his 278 games. During his time Spurs won the 1971 and 1973 League Cup along with the 1972 UEFA Cup.
Chivers made such an impact on the team that he was entered into the Tottenham Hotspurs Hall of Fame in 2007.
- Pat Jennings – Goalkeeper
Without a doubt, Pat Jennings is the best goalkeeper that Spurs have ever seen. The Northern Irish player created a record of 472 caps in his 13-year history with Spurs, and won FAW Player of the Year in 1973. Unfortunately, his last few years as a goalkeeper were with Arsenal, but that doesn’t stop him from being a Spurs player at heart.
- Harry Kane – Forward
Now some readers might be shocked to see Harry Kane so far down on our list. Although Kane is a phenomenal player, he has yet to bring the Spurs to any major title wins. If we were looking at players overall, then the England Captain would definitely be higher up the ranks, but until Spurs win the Premier League, Kane is staying in 8th place.
- Ledley King – Defender
King helped Spurs win the League Cup in 2008, and as a defender, he has managed to score a surprising 10 goals in his 13-year history. He also achieved 268 caps and 63 clean sheets.
- Steve Perryman – Midfielder
Perryman played as a midfielder and a defender during his time with the Spurs. Between 1969 and 1986, Perryman scored 31 goals and achieved 854 caps helping Tottenham achieve 6 titles while he was on the field.
Summary
Each of these players deserves a round of applause for their amazing efforts on the pitch! We should remember them for all time.
