Star players, a magnificent stadium and vocal support make Tottenham Hotspur big news. Spurs are one of the best-known teams in English football, and have some of the stats and records to back up that standing.
And they are a team the people like to back at the bookies, with a Spurs win a popular choice as part of accumulators, for example. Dig into this comprehensive BoyleSports review to see how you can enjoy betting on Spurs or any other team. And in doing so, you’ll want to be aware of the stats and facts behind the names. Here are some of those numbers that matter for Spurs:
15) First and only non-league FA Cup winners
It seems strange to think of Spurs as a non-league team, but that’s exactly what they were back in 1901 when they claimed the first of our FA Cup successes. Of course, that’s where the line “They first won the cup when the century begun” comes from in the famous 1991 Cup Final song. It’s unlikely we’ll see that trick repeated.
14) First Double winners of the 20th Century
It may have been done on a handful of occasions since, but winning the Double of the League and FA Cup was seem as almost impossible back in the 20th Century. At least until Bill Nicholson’s famous 1961 side went and did it, playing a stunning brand of football no less. True Glory Days.
13) Most consecutive wins at start of season
In that same Double-winning season, Spurs started the season on fire, winning their first eleven league games. That remains an English top-flight record to this day.
12) The first British UEFA competition winners
Spurs really were trailblazers, no more so when becoming the first English side to taste any degree of European glory when lifting the Cup Winner’s Cup back in 1963.
11) First British team to secure two different UEFA prizes
Spurs did it again nine years later, this time winning the UEFA Cup, and so becoming the first British team to win two different European trophies.
10) Most goals for England
Which team’s players have contributed the most goals to the English national team? Spurs, of course. And it’s really not surprising when you consider some of the players Spurts have boasted down the years. From Jimmy Greaves to England’s current captain Harry Kane, via Glenn Hoddle, Gary Lineker and Teddy Sheringham, every England manager has known that Spurs have the talent to make the national side tick. Oh, and it’s 255 goals and counting, with Manchester United players offering 253.The next highest is Liverpool, who are almost 100 goals behind.
9) Most England representatives
It’s not just goals that Spurs players have contributed to the national team. In total, 72 players who were contracted to Tottenham at the time have represented England, which is more than any other club can boast.
8) Most goals in a Premier League game
In November 2009 Jermaine Defoe scored five goals in a 9-1 win over Wigan Athletic. Defoe is one of five players to achieve that feat, with no player scoring more.
7) Success spanning the decades
Along with Manchester United, Spurs are the only English club to have won a major trophy is each of the six decades from the 1950s to the 2000s. That really is long-lasting success, even if it hasn’t always been as regular as we would have liked.
6) On the stock exchange
On the business side of things, 1983 was a seminal year. It was then that the company that owned the club was floated on the London Stock exchange, in doing so becoming the first ever European club, of any sport, to be listed on the stock market. Indeed, it was the first sports company anywhere to go public.
5) Highest Premier League attendance
Spurs boast the highest attendance number of any Premier League game. 83,222 saw the Lillywhites triumph 1-0 in the North London Derby at the New Wembley in February 2018.
4) Most goals for one Premier League club
Spurs legend Harry Kane currently has 191 goals for his boyhood club, which is more than any player has ever scored for a single club in the Premier League. Kane currently stands third on the all-time list.
3) Record win
Spurs’ record win came in an FA Cup game back in February 1960. It was poor Crewe Alexandra who were put to the sword that day, going down 13-2.
2) Champions League groups stage exploits
In the 2010-11 season Spurs became the first team in Champions League history to score at least two goals in all six of their group stage matches.
1) European final record win
In claiming the 1963 Cup Winner’s Cup, Spurs defeated Atletico Madrid 5-1 in the final. That remains the joint highest winning margin in a European showpiece in competition history.
