Bookies have Spurs outsiders to qualify for Europe
The bookmakers currently have Spurs priced at 10/3 to finish in the top six of the Premier League table this season.
Sports bookmaker William Hill has Bournemouth, Brighton and Crystal Palace ahead of Thomas Frank’s side in the market. In fact, they have Spurs as 11th favourite to finish in the top six this season, an achievement that would guarantee European football next season.
The odds suggest that punters don’t have much faith in this group of players to achieve success in the league this season, that’s despite winning the Europa League last year and qualifying for Champions League football as a result.
Despite that memorable night in Bilbao, Spurs really struggled in the league last season – something that ultimately led to the downfall and sacking of Ange Postecoglou in the summer. That departure allowed for Spurs to appoint the then Brentford boss Thomas Frank.
However, a fairly inconsistent start to the Premier League season has seen Spurs beat Man City and Everton, whilst also drawing at home to bottom of the table Wolves. This inconsistency has led bookmakers to drift the odds on Spurs qualifying for Europe via their league position.
The fact they’re longer odds than teams like Bournemouth, Brighton and Man Utd might in part be down to Tottenham’s involvement in the Champions League this season – an achievement that has been known to have an impact on a team’s performance in the league.
You just have to look at Spurs last season where all the focus was on the Europa League and not on the Premier League!
Spurs are 8/1 to finish in the top 4
Interestingly, Spurs are a shorter price than Brighton, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season – an achievement that will guarantee another year of Champions League football.
As such, it goes to show the bookmakers, like us fans, don’t know what Spurs will achieve this season. With injured players to come back and no international breaks until March, now’s the time to find some form and climb the table.
If Frank’s side can do that then any pressure on him will disappear and these odds will very quickly shorten in price. If the opposite were to happen then these long odds will only get bigger.
Either way, the conclusion Spurs fans can make from this is that the bookmakers are yet to be convinced that this team has what it takes to finish near the top of the table.
