Spurs Walk the Tightrope Again, But There’s StillSomething Brewing

Spurs have to dig deep to find creativity somewhere else. Normally, this is the moment when panic spreads across the fanbase, but there seems to be a bit more calm this time.

Tottenham fans know this feeling all too well. A new season begins with a large dose of optimism, a dash of dread, and an acceptance that anything could happen with this club. Thomas Frank turned up with a smile, a plan, and the promise that Spurs would be harder to bully. For a moment, it felt like the clouds were clearing. But then reality hits, and suddenly half the squad feels like it is wrapped in ice packs. Even so, there is something different in the air. Spurs may be plagued with injuries, but they’re never broken.

The big blow was James Maddison’s ACL injury in August this year. Maddison was supposed to be a centrepiece for Frank, but now he is gone for the long haul. Spurs have to dig deep to find creativity somewhere else. Normally, this is the moment when panic spreads across the fanbase, but there seems to be a bit more calm this time. Maybe it comes from the trust they have placed in Frank. Maybe it is because the squad has been built with a bit more balance.

The defensive issues tell a story of their own. Radu Dragusin’s knee injury is still a problem, and Dejan Kulusevski has been carrying knee troubles, too. Kota Takai looked like an exciting young signing until he was ruled out before he even kicked a ball. It is classic Tottenham luck. But hidden in that chaos is something worth noting. The club has been deliberately building more depth.

Some supporters joke that they need to check the injury list before they even check the lineup. And they aren’t wrong, because every time someone goes down, the team’s odds automatically change. When Maddison’s ACL injury occurred, Spurs’ outright betting odds dipped to 50/1, which translates into less than a 2% probability of Spurs taking the Premier League title. The best Premier League betting sites now list Spurs with a top-four finish, priced between 5/1 and 6/4, which is much more favourable by comparison, and this is despite inconsistent performances and injuries.

Yet it’s not all frustrating. One genuinely positive step is the overhaul of the medical and performance team. Spurs have brought in specialists, analysts, and staff from setups known for solid injury records. That alone is a proactive step. Fans have been asking for that level of detail and professionalism for years.

Another bright spot on the horizon is the rise of new players who are refusing to fade into the background. Lucas Bergvall has taken huge strides and appears to be a force to be reckoned with in the midfield. Whether he ends up deeper or more advanced, he plays with an air of confidence. He seems able to keep showing progress while ignoring the pressure.

Destiny Udogie is another one who continues to grow. His defensive positioning has improved, and his ability to break lines gives the Spurs something that feels fresh and modern. Even when the squad seems stretched, Udogie offers a reminder that this team is not as flimsy as it once was. There is a steely determination now.

And of course, there is still Son Heung-min. He is a voice of calm and the player Frank will lean on while others are recovering. The club is fortunate to have him during this time of change. Thomas Frank himself deserves some credit, too. He has not walked into the job making grand speeches. He talks with clarity, not fluff, and that is refreshing.

He doesn’t get swept up in the drama around the club. He seems genuinely unfazed by the expectation that Spurs should fall apart at the first sign of trouble. Supporters have responded well to him because he speaks like someone who understands that progress is built in steps and not in big leaps.

There is also a sense that the Spurs are slowly building a strong identity again. The frantic, confused football of previous managers is fading. The possession structure is more deliberate. Players know where they are supposed to be. Even with absences everywhere, the structure is visible. That is something the Spurs have not had with consistency in quite a while now.

So while the injuries are brutal, this is not a team on the edge anymore. It is a team striving forward, even with the problems they’re facing. The supporters can also sense that something is changing. It might be slower than fans want, and that might be frustrating. But it is real. For once, Tottenham looks like a club that knows exactly where it is heading.
