Some see "proven Premier League player" as a sign of quality for any player surviving in the league. For me, Long is an example of a proven Premier League player that has over time proven to be quite mediocre; not a sign of quality.

The kind of player a second placed team trying to improve should avoid looking at.

N'Jie were more of an unknown. That means there's a higher risk of failure. But there's also a higher risk of success.

I didn't know enough to say wether I'd want him or not last year, but I'd definately want an unknown over a player that I'd be fairly certain wasn't good enough, like Long.

Unknown: Might be top, might be good, might be mediocre, might be shit.

Proven mediocre: Might be mediocre, might be not good enough.

I'd always go for the unknown in that situation, and especially if he was black box or scouted by Poch's boys.

good post. ideally I would prefer better than long & njie.
but not sure how much we have to spend etc.
 
Before judging N'Jie as good enough or not depending on only 7 games for us, it's probably worth looking at what he was doing at Lyon which got him noticed by us.

7 goals and 7 assists in around 1500 minutes is really quite good for a wide attacking player. That's a scoring contribution of 0.83 per 90, which would be pretty stunning if he could do that in the PL. Even half that would be similar to Eriksen/Lamela's levels of offense.
 
The Lallana story is interesting. I'd dismiss it, but then again it does seem rather leftfield - so leftfield in fact that it could be true.

If, and that's a big if, our scouting department thinks he has fantastic footballing assets that are currently being underused at Liverpool (but would flourish at Spurs) then I could see the logic in it.
Added to that, he's English, and would therefore help us keep on top of home grown player rules: remember that we sold Townsend, and may be likely to sell Mason... so this could start being an issue if we're not careful.

It's a very difficult one to say. If he'd had the season he's had with us, while still at Lyon, then absolutely not. But he may well have stayed injury free and continued to progress well - perhaps even exploding onto the scene.

We took a fairly low-cost punt on a promising young player who has great pace, and we're yet to see how he turns out.
 
We still need a striker, a midfield general for direct competition to Dier and/Dembele and a pacy attacking player.

On top of that comes if available Del Alli sort of signings.

And for the people who STILL argue we don't need/can't accomodate pacy wide player, I refer to the Southampton game.

And given how deep Soton sat, how exactly were they going to get behind?

Pace matters when you have space to use it. Soton were so deep that N'Jie and Son, who both have plenty of pace, couldn't use it.

We still created more and better chances, but it wasn't through pace, it was through very smart movement to make space, and accurate shooting. We were just quite unlucky with how things went.

Best as I can count, we've got 12 in our current squad who would need to be registered as not homegrown out of the 17 allowed. So it won't exactly be a problem for a while with a manager who likes youth and to promote from within the club.

Could you refer to a specific situation or two in that match where pace would have been the solution? I didn't see it.
