Gotze has so much talent than Schurrle(that is a good player of course). Reus was always playing second field to Mario in Dortmund, and Reus is fantastic. In raw talent Gotze is like one of the best 20 european players in the world

I would ask if people were this critical of Van der Vaart before he signed, but I guess it happened so soon there wasn't enough time for people to start turning noses up.

Didn't know much about this 'Goatse' player, nor what he even looked like... so I punched his name into Google Images...

Thanks for the link. I was excited at the prospect of Götze but after reading this article I m not sure a move to Potch's Tottenham would be good for either party.
It didn't put me off him so much but certainly got me thinking about other players who once excelled and have moved and never regained their form. I am sure there are players that have resurrected their careers, I just can't think of any. The one thing I do have faith in is Poch's ability to coach players and improve them, so I'd like to think he could sprinkle his magic dust onto him.

Assuming he came, the biggest challenge would be expectation, media and fans, if he is struggling for form his name and reputation still would probably dictate a player to walk straight into a side and impose himself, when evidence might suggest we would need a patient fan base whilst he is re-built and re-introduced. Something we are not.

Are we serious about Mario Gotze ?
A big name no doubt and we are a big club but this all the same not something I expected.
It has memories of the VDV purchase ex Madrid given his contract was run down, similar to Gotze. Levy got VDV for CL experience, is he playing the same game ?

If he is to come I hope Poch is accepting and is built into the match plan, no place in our team for a fancy man. I should be excited but I'm sure on this one.

Maube its my inferiority complex talking, but Götze just feels like one of those players we don't ordinarily get to sign...
But these are no ordinary times..!!

Fookin hell Mother... this could be on!

Great post as usual.
He clearly possesses a great talent, but he has fallen away quite badly from the level he was at before leaving Dortmund. He doesn't walk into our team ahead of Lamela, Alli or Eriksen. He looks out of shape & is clearly out of form. However, he still has lots of time on his side. I just don't see or want us blowing a huge hole in the transfer budget, or meeting huge wage demands for a big name signing who is in need of being "re-built" to quote Guido 🇺🇦 Guido 🇺🇦

I think thinking in this way is folly at this point.

Last season I thought Dier moving into DM was the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of, he looked awful in pre-season and many on here agreed. Then he becomes the best DM in the league.

You can't possibly know if he'll replace them or not, Poch often surprises us. The idea that "He wouldn't replace any of our attacking trio" is a complete assumption based on limited knowledge.

"Bench Warmer" tends to mean an inferior player you only turn to when someone is injured. I don't think anyone in our team is a "Bench warmer". Davies coming in for Rose or Trippier for Walker barely impacts the team anymore, that's how good our back up options are. Poch is clearly trying to make a team that could be any 11 and still be world class, it amazes me that people still don't fully get this or refer to it, instead seeing a traditional "First 11, first attacking trio" with everyone else being "bench warmer". That isn't how modern football is going, especially not Tottenham. Those statements are Redknapp era.

Poch doesn't want an A-Team. He wants a rotating 23-25 man squad that can always win. Gotze fits into this.

I don't know about you, but in a must win game with 20 mins to go I'd rather bring on Gotze than Pritchard. This "Bench warmer" would win us far more points than one might think.

But even with a rotating squad, you still have 11 guys who you'd choose to start a big game. If Gotze isn't one of them, then how on earth can him being one of the 3 highest earners on the team be justified? I'd be happy to see Gotze in a Spurs shirt, but if it happens then he's a guaranteed starter until he loses that spot by being crap.

His stats are actually pretty impressive, despite a poor season where he was out of favour

2014-2015
48 Apps
15 Goals
7 Assists
3357 Minutes Played
Contributes to a goal every 152 minutes

2015-2016
21 Apps
6 Goals
4 Assists
1219 Minutes Played
Contributes to a goal every 121 minutes

In terms of output per game, he's actually improved from 2014. The main issue is that he's nowhere near the performance levels he was hitting in 2012-2013 (Making a goal every 89 minutes) and 2013-2014 (Making a goal every 100 minutes). This raises questions over whether he ever can hit that level again or if he's on a slow decline at the age of 24.

Comparing that to Alli's..

28 appearances
10 goals
9 assists
4 face offs
32 waves
2848392 nutmegs.

:allitongue:

All joking aside, as long as Gotze doesn't affect Alli's development then I'm all for him. Gotze is a player I've always loved, would be a real statement of intent if we did sign him.
