We don't though. It doesn't compel the player or his agent to accept the same offer. If Man U bid 80m and we matched it the next day, it really doesn't do anything to prevent Bale from accepting Man U's contract offer over Spurs'.

It's more symbolic than anything. It only buys a few extra days to get a representative down to Spain to make our case for Bale to return.
