MENTAL FORTITUDE

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

end of an era
Do we suffer from an institutional malaise? Is our lack of mental fortitude something so native to the club that, no matter the players we recruit, we can never break our routine of weakness? Perhaps, but I am not a superstitious man. There must be an answer.

Poch has been the man to build us up and the players he has developed will fund our transition into a top quality stadium as they are sold for great profit in the coming two years. But looking further ahead, is Poch the man to develop the requisite mental strength for us to bring footballing success to our new home in the long term?

Those are the elephants in the room. There is elephant shit up the walls and trunks hanging out the windows.

I know I will receive abuse for this thread, but it is a topic we must be mature enough to broach if we want to call ourselves true, honest supporters and not Poch and Toby fanboys.

I'm gonna wait to comment on this one until our season is over.
No sense rocking the boat with this right now, at least for me.
Most of it has already been said in the Poch/Brum threads anyways...

Inertia is much more negative than addressing the issues.
And yet your rallying call really gets the positive vibes flowing...

Have you considered forwarding your post onto the club...? Maybe Poch can incorporate your inspirational words into his pre-match speech on Wednesday!

Policy doesn't allow game changers/ winners to be signed (Just one ) to get us over the line .
An Ardilles , or even Modric type at the end of career would make that difference to add that element to a young squad , than another prospect sold at his peak to a rival.

yes our players lack that mental believe, Poch should have got help in at the end of the 2 horse race season when we bottled it, but it appears he didn't search outside help
Poch has weaknesses that he has not addressed, not able to change games, not putting on subs early, saying doesn't matter winning cups, something that he needs help on
yes we need that winner to come into the club, but we also need help mentally

There is definitely an issue of some sort here. Call it belief, call it confidence or a lack of the ruthless winning mentality. It's one of the reasons I believe we should have been playing full-strength sides for the League and FA cup games, especially in the later rounds.

This team just needs to win something to kick-start a change in mindset*

*Golden boots, manager of the month or goal of the month doesn't count.

There seems to be so much negativity. Last four results not great but look at the season overall... If you'd asked anybody in August if they would take fa cup semi final place, a thrilling champions league run (in terms of amazing results against top class oppo) and fourth place while simultaneously playing in a shithole of a stadium then I bet 99% of people would be well pleased.
Enough of the melting and moaning and personal and insults. You're (you know who you are) are sounding a bit like those entitled Woolwich twats.

But that’s the issue. We seem to do well when there is minimum pressure, but when it gets to the important games we seem to freeze.
It’s a club thing not just this set of players. Take Liverpool, we are every bit as good as them and yet we all expect them to win The CL by beating RM, if that was us we would blow that game. They have a better winning mentality than us and that is what bugs me more than anything.

We need to toughen up and adopt a much better attitude in big games.

Lack of silverware.

Majority of our players haven't a clue on how it feels like holding a trophy with your hands hence the lack of desire and grit to give everything to get over the line when it matters the most.

Did we freeze? Or just get beaten on the day by a better/luckier team?
I do think an outfield captain would help a little.

A really good post but I don't think it's as straightforward as the question you propose.

We are a peculiar club for sure and there have to be questions about Pochettino being the man to take us beyond where we are but how many managers could actually get us to that point in the first place?

My biggest concern is how easily we are jolted and that we always seem to fall short in that final analysis.

See the Chelsea draw 2 seasons ago, this season the losses in the Cup competitions.

On Saturday a last minute goal concession when a point would have made such a difference.

Manager or players?

It is something we are overcoming but this season has seen us struggle in critical games.

More “look at me” from the forums answer to Talk Sport.

Winning mentality is often mentioned by ex pros as being very important, so it’s difficult to argue against. However, you can look to Stoke City and their half a dozen Champions League winners and see it’s not just winning that’s important.

If we’d beaten ManU, the second best team in the country, this wouldn’t even be a thing. Even after losing at the weekend, we’d have a final to look forward to and all would be well in the world.

Those of us who wanted us to strengthen in January were being told we were idiots a few short weeks ago because we were on a massive unbeaten run and we should trust the squad and the manager. What’s happened to that? One defeat and the sky is falling.

A dodgy semi final against a bigger and better team and we are in all sorts of trouble now. It’s not nice to see us slowly become one of the entitled few, expecting to win everything and throwing a fit when we don’t.

It’s a very wise post because it is now that you measure your real step. You don have a sheik that will give you rivers of money or a rich American uncle ready to do follies. Keep the nerves of steel and take what you deserve. You have a game less than Liverpool.
Race on the Reds, put them under pressure.

Nice post Vince!
