I don't know how anyone can watch us over the last 12 months and not come to the conclusion that RB is our issue and not Midfield.

There is a reason Poch started playing Trippier (and giving Walker the hump in the process), there's a reason why Aurier - our shiny 25m purchase - has become firmly second choice, there's a reason why Southgate chose Trippier over Walker to play RB.

Midfield. Midfield. Midfield
Have you ever read Thinking, Fast and Slow, bus-conductor bus-conductor ?

Walker was not benched for being inferior to Tripps. He was most likely benched for agitating for a move. Punished for not being completely committed.

Why do you think Tripps is targeted? Dodgy positional sense/reading of the game or lack of athleticism/physicality? Or both? Or are there other issues regarding his game that you have identified?

Probably both - it's a lot more noticeable when we play 4 at the back.

Shaw absolutely terrorised him and he's fat. I think the reason Poch sticks with Trippier is the fact that he CAN have a ridiculous end product and is a genuine threat from set pieces.

I personally wish we had two attacking wing backs who got to the byline and cut back their crosses as opposed to just hit and hope crosses into the box like Trippier and to an extent Davies do - but that's just my personal preference on what I like to see. Walker/Rose in 15/16 for example were a lot more pleasing on the eye, even though Trippier and Davies matched them statistcally in 17/18.

Where did this myth of Walker and Rose being good crossers come from?

Crossing ability between those four is arguably equal. Rose and Walker won out on pure athletisism.

No idea - why? who said they were good crossers?

I said I preferred Rose and Walker's style. Genuinely got excited when I saw them bombing down the wing and we'd find them with a pass, whereas it's a sound of 'meh' whenever Trippier or Davies get it from me and I like both of them.

He's not targeted, that's nonsense, but he's always been the most attacking of our FB's either side, and therefore there will always be a tactical price, especially if you don't have dynamic defensive midfielders and a back 3 to tactically cover it.

Just look at the Watford game, where we had a back three and better defined midfield structure - we allowed them fuck all. Or look at last years games against top quality opposition like Real Madrid, Woolwich H, ManU h, Liverpool H, Chelsea away - all with Trippier, even ManC home Sane ended up being kept quite and subbed - because Trippier was played in a more conventional way.

If we want a RB that plays as a midfielder/AM in a back four, there will always be a compromise, just as there is with some of the best full backs in the world (like Marcelo eg).

Our defensive woes have come from losing Wanyama, the degeneration of Dembele at the same time and (maybe due to Alderwerield's contract situation last season) switching predominantly back to a 2CB system more often, which will inevitably leave gaps behind that FB, that plodders like Dier combined with only 2CB's can't cover.

I don't rate him at all mate, never have. If I was the oppo manager I'd target him to. (I could bang on for ages about why but doubt that will go down to well with everyone on here :allitongue:. I've written a bunch of stuff in his thread if you want to bore yourself to sleep tonight).

Not according to Pochettino in his book. I have no doubt Walker knew of City's interest (just as others like Dier and Rose did) but according to Poch himself, the first fall out was Walker disagreeing with him about being rotated with Trippier for proper games.

I haven't read Poch's book, so I was unaware of that. Can anyone else confirm that? Is there anything to suggest that Poch applied some spin to that story?

I would prefer to have more athletic wing backs, too. It bores me when we play two wing-backs who cannot run at the opposition. And I think we swing far too many crosses into the box-it's so primitive.

He has a wand of a right foot (sometimes) but I don't have total faith in him. I will have a look for previous posts about him.

Not sure why he would, he was open about all of them being tapped (Walker, Dier, Rose). It could be spin, but that’s what he said - Walker came to see him and they disagreed about rotation, then a bit later on Walker tells him he wants to move.

We had Walker on a long deal he’d signed not long prior to that, Look at the same scenarios we had with Rose and Dier, also bring chased by Manchester clubs. Different outcome.

Like I said, I’m sure Walker knew City (and Utd) were interested, but I think the final straw was Poch started rotating Trippier in for proper games.

So why is our left LB spot not targeted by the oppo? Only our RB spot, you haven't answered this, the midfield is the same.

Walker was dropped by Poch for the same reason he dropped Toby (he wanted out, his mind wasn't on Spurs).

Walker played CB at the Word Cup because Southgate wanted 3 ball playing CB's, it wasn't about Tripps being better than Walker, I guarantee you if it's a shootout for the RB slot Walker plays ahead of him all day long because he's far superior player (demonstrates the faith Southgate had in him too that he selects Walker above Jones, Smalling, Cahill).

I think Aurier is better than Tripps, he has one major flaw and that's diving in and not staying on his feet, I like him because he doesn't bang in 200 crosses per game, he commits the oppo defence, he also links better with our right side of midfield, keeps the ball better, positionally he's better than trips too. I'd also play KWP over him too, not 100% sure why KWP doesn't play more often, I can only guess that he's still not physically fit enough???

I know you prefer Trippier to Walker, and I know how entrenched you are on the matter, so I am not going to be drawn into a vortex over it.

Are you telling me that, as far as you are concerned, Poch began to rate Trippier as the better of the two, and for that reason, picked him for the marquee games?

Watching athletic wing backs run fast but have no idea what to do when they arrived bored me witless.
I don't know about you, but I quite like watching Ben Davies fail to beat the first man with his crosses.

This notion that any team “targets” Trippier per se is disingenuous. If anything we probably are more vulnerable down our right due to how we play - and how we set up and apply - and when we play a back four and a fucking plodder like Dier - and a much more risk averse Lb like Davies - who’s far more reticent going forward - that does create a less structurally sound right side inevitably.

You keep harping on about banging in crosses but there’s much more to Trippier’s game, he makes more incisive passes than any of the fb’s you like, more than most players, just look at the Fulham and Utd games where goals come from clever passes he makes - not crosses. in fact, only DSilva, Salah, Sanchez, Hazard and Aguero are averaging more key passes a game than Trippier in the PL.

That's the point, when there’s a better option than a cross, Trippier is far more likely to see it and succeed in playing it, than the likes of Walker of Rose. He just also puts in more crosses - and of higher quality- than those two as well.

I'm saying that I think Poch had definitely started to see some merit in Trippier's game, especially as we were playing a back 3 often then, and a busy cunt like Wanyama, who'd cover laterally as well as shuffling up and down like Dier does. That back end (15/16) he out performed Walker's creative output (assists, chances created, key passes) by about 200/300%.

I don't know about you, but I quite like watching Ben Davies fail to beat the first man with his crosses.

Almost as much as watching Rose bomb past his marker and then whack the ball to the opposite corner flag...

If Walker is so fabulous and Trippier so bad, surely Poch wouldn't have allowed him to leave like he didn't with Dier and Rose, we had him on a newish contract.

And again, if Walker was deemed so superior, Southgate had no such issues as you say Poch had, he would have played Walker as the RB and just put one of the other CB's (like Dier) into the RCB role.

And you thinking Aurier is better than Trippier, isn't answering why you think after 12 months, and paying 25m for him, Poch is still preferring Trippier even more now than 12 months ago.

Managers don't get everything right, just because Poch and Southgate prefer him doesn't conclusively prove Trippier is the better package, I don't think it's black or white either, but I think there's pretty solid anecdotal evidence, supported by solid statistical evidence, that Trippier is the better player in the right set up at least.

Either way, having the most creative and productive right back in the PL is hardly a catastrophe, even if he was a complete disaster as a defender, but he isn't, at worst it's a tactical issue that should be easily solved by either playing a back 3, Wanyama recovering or playing a more dynamic CM set up. The Watford game was a pretty good example of part of that, as the Statsbomb pice by James Yorke pointed out.

And either way, midfield where we have (a CB) Dier who can't play under pressure, a knackered Dembele, fucked Wanyama, Fucked Winks (who's progressive but also has defensive issues), Sissoko who's got the technical finesse of a Rhino on PCP and two No.10's filling in, is a much, much bigger issue.

Why don't the oppo attack and have joy down our left flank?

You mean like the goal ManU nearly scored when they pressed Dier and Rose ? Or the left side that Sessegnon got put clean through on Fulham, or one of the goals and the bar that Watford hit ? That left?
No mate, I mean THIS......
key-pass-locations-april-to-date.png

You know I mean this because this is what we are specifically referring to. Why do you ignore this? This shows where our opponents attack us from over a sustain period of time, our RIGHT flank. I ask you for a 3rd or 4th time, WHY ARE OUR OPPONENTS DOING THIS? By choosing to cherry pick moments in random games doesn't disprove what the oppo is doing. In a single game our opponents are going to attack us in different ways, through the middle, down the left etc but over a course of an entire game the trend is clear, over the course of multiple games together it is even more clear, the above show this.

Why are you so defensive over this issue? I thought you were someone who liked to analyse the game, well analyse this, WHY ARE TEAMS ATTACKING US (and successfully) DOWN OUR RIGHT FLANK. (we both agree our midfield has been compromised through injury but still with that same midfield in place the oppo attacks our RIGHT not our left, so it's NOT our Midfield).
