Manager Mauricio Pochettino

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

If anyone believes no other manager could have won a domestic cup and finished top 4 with this squad by now they are deluded.

I want Poch here for 20 years, because it will all fall into place. But his comments went too far today, and basically show why we’ve whimped out with bizarre teams down the years

I follow Ergo on twitter, and he's having a 'mare this evening (couple of drinks down the hatch perhaps?)

He seems to be interpreting the game/lineup as if Poch's hand wasn't forced by our injury crisis. Will regret some of these tweets in the morning.

How many fans cannot see Poch couldn’t risk taking this game more seriously with some PL matches which are far more important coming up. We just don’t have enough of a fit squad at the moment.

I normally like Ergo, but he does have some interesting contrarian thoughts at times.

I don't even disagree with the cold logic of saying top 4 is the priority, etc, but it just doesn't feel like the time to say it.

A lot of fans just want to see him be gutted about today, even if that involves lamenting our injuries/fixture pileup/etc. He was all smiles in the post-match press conference after Chelsea because he was (somewhat justifiably) proud of the players' showing when taking into account our decimated attacking options, but I totally understand why loads of fans are rubbed up the wrong way by it.

I've been really disappointed by Poch's team selections for cups in previous seasons, and actually felt like he was taking them more seriously this year. The big irony is that when he looked a bit more pro-cup, we suddenly had the worst injury crisis of the last 5 years.

Funnily enough, Ergo is the one I kept following but gave up on BankruptSpurs and CookPassTim a while ago - became too grating for me.

Bearing in mind would any other manager have this squad at their disposal? It’s one that Poch has built and it’s a massive assumption to think whether some of these players would be playing for Tottenham if Pochettino wasn’t in charge. Remember Timmy not rating Vertonghen. So yes we might have another Ramos/Mourinho/AVB in charge who might win us a League Cup or FA Cup but I bet it is no guarantee of us doing well in the league.

Today’s result was shite, but considering our lack of fit starters Poch had no choice to make massive changes. Palace also are no push overs and to write them off at home is showing a lack of respect.

Funny you should mention that what has happened to Bankrupt? Used to be one of the best now he’s gone almost full Brexit.

Is CookPassTim still posting doesn’t seem to be a frequent as he used to be? Even Trunk has become it a bit of a bore.
Oh God, I forgot about TehTrunk. Binned him around the same time too. Self-righteous in the extreme.

It's been a long time since I read BankruptSpurs, but wasn't there a lot of anti-Brexit melting from him?

Sorry I thought Poch hadn’t been backed....

Just hypothetically, this squad with another manager. I don’t think it’s pure fantasy to think we couldn’t have won a domestic cup.

I think we could well have, and if that makes people uncomfortable it’s probably because they think so too

We probably could have, it’s fine margins. However under a different coach we would probably have a very different squad. These players love Poch and Poch loves them. Some seem to be playing over and above their ability.

FA Cup prize money £6.6m. Last 16 CL money £70m it's a no brainer Sammy.

If this sum was offered to you in two separate envelops you ain't picking the one marked £6.6m. The battle for clubs fighting to stay in the PL or for those in the Championship looking to get promoted the jeopardy is the same, PL is worth £200m per year in a cheque form TV. Those in the championship will prioritise that over the Cup. Teams fighting relegation (from 10th down) will prioritise the PL over the cup.

I love the FA Cup, but it's dead, it will remain a dead cup until or if the prize money is worth +£50m. All I've seen this weekend from all the games shown on TV have been held in half-empty stadiums (this included the Woolwich/Utd game) their is a reason for this, it's dead, unfortunately.

Poch is brave with his standpoint, it opens himself up to ridicule and those managers up and down the league that lie to their fans (they hold the same priorities) absolutely love his stance as it takes the heat of them. I fully get the backlash from it, so many love the Cup but it's dead, everything around it reflects this. I can't fault Poch talking with honesty about it, whilst other managers bottle it.

The thing is that I don’t know if anyone could build the team like Poch did. He build the team and developed a lot of players, that is 5 out of 5 stars of work. But we should be winning trophies in the last 3 seasons. Unbelievable how we couldn’t win a fa cup or league cup in the process. I love him but I don’t know if he can takes us to next level. Next season will be very telling.

Lost League Cup final to the Champions of England (who had a full weeks prep and rest whilst we were in Italy 72hrs before). Lost FA Cup semi to Champions of England (whilst training for the game a member of our family drops down dead on a neighbouring pitch 2 days before the game). Lost FA Cup semi to one of only two teams to have finished above us, I think we should have beaten this team, outside of the first 20mins we didn't play well.

TDLR: we've lost to the better team (league position determine this) on every occasion.

How did he build a team with no players he wanted

Any halfwits who still don't quite grasp it, please read a few of Hogdsons comments. As he said, if a trophy makes you a success as a manager and only a trophy, around 98% of football managers are shit.

Wake up a little bit regarding Pochettino & ENIC, as a unit they've done what no other club in country that wasn't already a big player or had money pumped into them has been able to do

Well, there is this issue that 98% of managers cannot ever coach a team that comprises of -
- EPL golden boot, WC top scorer, one of most profilic strikers in the world for years
- One of top 10 playmakers in the world, a true leader and recent top scorer of Denmark national team
- Asian best footballer, who is leader of South-Korea squad, played well in WC and won Asian Games
- Captain of WC winning team. Captain of French national side.
- Central defencive pairing of the WC bronce medal winner and the best national side in the world of FIFA rankings.

I mean, you cannot put the same expectations on managers with such roaster and say on Hodgon with very medicore Palace side at his disposal.
At the same time, it is cruitial to mention that Pochettino has done absolutely brilliant job developing those players. I see little question in the fact that he is the best manager in the world right now in developing players.

Yet there is other half of it. Despite assemblyng such a magnificent squad, we do not have anything to show for it. I mean nothing tangible. We have been good in league and enjoying best spell in decades. But I understand some questions being asked. And asking them myself.

What is our next step? "Winning top 4 trophy" for years and years, and nothing more?
I believe that with this squad the aim should be higher.

Ah, here comes the arse covering.

Criticizing Poch for today is ridiculous. And criticizing him for prioritizing the top 4 and CL over the two domestic cups is ridiculous. Fans have it imbedded in their damn heads that winning a trophy fixes everything. No other manager of a top club in the league prioritizes the domestic cups over the top 4 race. Poch is just the only one that will publicly say it.

Every team rotates their players for these matches. Unfortunately for Spurs right now, rotating players means guys like GNK, KWP, Skipp, Llorente all start together. I mean, our current regulars can’t play every single minute like they have been. They needed rest. And giving them rest today is much more preferred than resting Wednesday and having the gap closed between us and the 3 teams behind us in the table.

As far as the subs today go, they all made sense. None of them were Poch not caring about the cup or waving a white flag. Jan has logged so many minutes over the past month. We wanted to change formation, which proved to work despite no goal, and Poch has always been comfortable with Foyth and Sanchez, as he should be.

Dier coming off because he just played 90 minutes away to Chelsea fresh off an injury.

Lucas off instead of Llorente because believe it or not, Llorente was providing more chances in that game. Plus, Crystal Palace were packing the box and no passes were getting through. Our best hope was a big guy like Llorente heading one in.

Even with all that, Poch had the team set up to win the game. It’s not his fault KWP had one of the worst handball penalties I’ve ever seen. It’s not his fault GNK scoffed a wide open shot. It’s not his fault Trippier went wide on the penalty. Blaming Poch for this loss is so stupid and I never understand the short-shorted fans after situations like this.

Also, to the crowd who says Poch will leave because we don’t win trophies. He’s been telling you for years that trophies aren’t everything. Yeah, he’d love to win some but he doesn’t believe they are the only thing that define success. Why would be be planning to leave because of a lack of trophies when he’s telling you he doesn’t prioritize these things like fans do?

Oh look - the paid ENIC not has even found a way to praise the manager after this result and subsequent appalling comments. Any why can’t we win the FA Cup and make the CL R16 at the same time? Or even the Carabao?
