Transfers Summer 2019 transfer thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Eriksen (27) who has refused to sign a contract all season, you simply can't make a player sign
Toby (30) who has made it clear for a while that he will wait until the summer to make a decision

The point is, there is a number that could have gotten both of those pens to paper last summer, and if we weren't willing to meet those demands, we were best off selling them last summer. Being prepared to do so, and being prepared to buy replacements.

Again, if we lose Toby for 25M, that's a business failure for the club, resulting from poor financial management. Same story if we lose Eriksen for anything less than an eye-watering sum.

Agree with a lot of that post Blakey but this bit is just giving the wrong impression ...

The only players out of contract this summer are Llorente (34) and Vorm (35) - both of whom would accept one year extensions

Next year ( so your 12 months window ) -

Eriksen (27) who has refused to sign a contract all season, you simply can't make a player sign
Toby (30) who has made it clear for a while that he will wait until the summer to make a decision
Vert (33) who good as he is will be 34 when his contract runs down
Janssen (24) - and he'd bite your hand off for a new contract

So you just got this emphasis all wrong - we have not done a Woolwich and allowed all our most valuable assets to run down their contracts, in fact with eight players signing new contracts last year it's almost the exact opposite ...

I completely get that you can't force players to sign contracts, but you really shouldn't let it go beyond 24 months, if they haven't signed then they must be sold. Certainly with valuable assets. Of course if it's a player with a relatively low transfer value it's less important, sometimes even desirable, but not with your most valuable assets and Eriksen is definitely in our top 3, maybe top 2.

You know how highly I rate Eriksen, and I would probably least like to lose him of all people, but it's really, really poor planning to allow him to get to 12 months left on a contract, it risks losing enormous potential value or worse, means clubs know they only have to wait a year to save themselves 70+m.

With you on that - Eriksen could have gone last summer for a huge sum (look at Coutinho) and I know it was considered, the problem was that no quality replacement was available at the right price or salary.

It was believed (and still is to a degree) that he will sign a new contract, but even if he doesn't it was felt his value would remain very high this summer, as it indeed has ...

The obvious danger is Eriksen stalling for another 12 months and leaving on a free ... but if that has always been his plan, not that I'm suggesting it was, but if it was there's nothing the club could have done.

Eriksen has personally lost probably 10m in salary whilst 'considering' his options so you know he's taking this decision seriously. Personally I think a move is now best for everyone, give HK the position and see how that works

Lloris / Gazza / Whiteman
Tripps / Toby / Vert / Sanchez / Foyth / Aurier / Davies / New Signing / New Signing
Lamela / Wanyama / Dier / Moussa / Dele / Winks / Skipp / Kane / New signing
Son / Lucas / Llorente / New Signing

was playing around with a possible squad for next year .... came up with this on the back of a fag-packet

I would also sanction like for like sales and replacements - Tripps - Toby - Wanyama - Vert but you can't change to much all at once.

Gone are Eriksen, Rose, KWP, GKD, Vorm - 150m?

In come two defenders, midfield and striker - 200m

Bit crazy putting one of the world's best strikers in as attacking midfield, but you could argue that's where both Messi and Ronaldo play ...

But you can't just assume the deal you want is magically going to appear, and inaction has a price, you lose the chance to get maximum value for the player, you are spending player capital by not making a decision.

But that's precisely wrong. There IS something the club could have done. Two things actually. It could pay the wages Eriksen is seeking, or it could sell him for maximum value.

Any way you slice it, there is no way around spending ever inflating sums to maintain a competitive level.

Reading redcafe just now... the 'predict the 19/20 team' thread (we should have one of them?)

Wan bissaka and Alderweireld are pretty popular on lots of people's lists.

This season is two PL games away from surpassing last season.
It’s in our hands to finish same position, 1pt behind last season, yet reach the CL final.

Yet here are a load of “told you so’s” claiming they were right that the last summer transfer window was a disaster and the club is going backwards.
Wait till end of the season
Don’t jinx it

How? If Eriksen refused to sign, and as he claims it has nothing to do with wages, how exactly would you make him sign? break his legs? True we could have sold him for 100m plus, however if Eriksen couldn't be adequately replaced then selling him would have risked us being mid-table, thus costing us 100m in European money and untold loss in marketing income ... how would that seriously be a sensible business option?

Because a CL semi-final is going backwards .... am I right?
Why are you focusing on the on-pitch results? FFS, as has been pointed out we could easily win a tin pot like the CL and still be regressing. Anyone can win a fucking trophy...only one club can ever win the fucking summer....that's what we're competing for! How can anyone ever get excited about unboxing FIFA in August if it doesn't come with loads of new players on your favourite team?!

Everton, Wolves and Leicester have better fullbacks and midfielders than us at the moment.

We do not spend well this summer we could find ourselves 10th in the league next season and unfairly blaming Poch who has done nothing more than polishing turds over the last 3 years.

This is the make or break transfer window because this current squad is more likely to finish 12th than 2nd next season.

Full backs probably, midfielders no. Winks and Sissoko would walk into their teams. But I get your point.
Poch system was the best with prime Walker/Rose. We need something similar next season.

FBs aye (not sure on Wolves). It’s actually quite shocking that we’re third but our full backs aren’t in the top 7 for me in the league.

Midfield? Not sure, maybe if you group their best together. But are attacking unit is light years ahead of theirs

We could potentially finish 10th because shitty clubs who are 20 points below us happen to have better... Full backs!!!?

Heard it all now

Poch system was at its peak with a fit Wanyama and Dembele, and it actually improved in the back end of 16/17 when Trippier came into it and exceeded Walkers output in a third of the time.

There are better midfielders in the bottom three than Sissoko.
