Winks definitely can play the DM role. I would play him as a Dm moving forward and not a box to box as he simply won't be able to contribute in terms of goals.

Don't think he's good enough as a DM to be honest.

When you're putting out the pitiful defensive numbers that he is, it'll become a problem.

Though that COULD be because he's there with Sissoko and Eriksen/Dele who aren't doing enough to help him. I don't know.

Largely agree. i just don't think Winks is a pure DM... Prior to this year Winks would have had Dembele, Vic, Dier or Moose alongside him bringing the beef and as said this year we've leaked many more goals.

To reiterate:

#8: Winks/Sissoko/N'Dombele/LoCelso/(Dele?)

#6: Dier

I'd think of it more in terms of duos who can fulfill the collective responsibility of those two roles, rather than strictly subcategorizing them.

And on that basis it's no wonder we're so hot for Ndombele as he has the diversity of skills to partner either Winks or Sissoko, who can also partner one another. Three plug-and-play options for two spots, a brilliant position to be in.

He's more than good enough to play as a deep lying playmaker. His positional sense is excellent and hes tactically very smart. Obviously not gonna be a Makelele type putting tackles everywhere DM but a dm that sticks to his position and protects the back 4.

Also with someone like N'dombele in midfield(please god) who has energy to fucking burn and puts in tackles like it's gone out of fashion...Winks will be absolutely fine as the DM.

Just my opinion but I think levy will happily see winks and Sissoko as our midfield for next season . Probably give Poch a couple of back up options around the 15 million mark . But that’s it

Anybody thinking we will be spending 40 million upwards on players are going to be seriously disappointed
A couple of back up options at 15 million wouldn't get us Tom Carroll and Stambouli resigned in this market

I can undertsand that and when picking the team the blend is what matters, but our comparatively poor defensive record this year concerns me. I'd also expect Lo Celso & Dele to require similar steel around them. Meanwhile, Sissoko needs to be able to stretch his legs a bit more and I suspect N'Dombele to be similar.

Would you be happy to start next season with just Dier?

Before the links to X or Y started flowing, I'd have said we must buy a CM & a DM this window... I like the sound of that Diarwa (sp?) chap we were linked with, but like I say, I think POch's ideal formation dictates the finer detail to what remains from this debate.

I think if Poch persists with this horrible diamond that's exactly what we need.... (We've lacked said protection this season).

Can N'dombele be that guy?

I haven't seen enough of him to say.....

Don't really get why anyone's bent our of shape about what Eriksen said. It's not like he slagged the club in any way (A la Rose), just said he feels like a new challenge but if that doesn't happen then he'd be happy to stay. Nobody has played more minutes over the lat 6 years than he has.

Never really get bothered about players saying stuff like like this. There was nothing disrespectful about it, the season is finished.
An overheard argument:

Her - what the fuck are you on Tinder for?!?!
Him - well, I know we’ve been married for 7 years but I’m just seeing what’s out there.
Her - what the fuck?!?!
Him - it’s ok, if there’s nobody hotter or sluttier than you, I’ll not shag them and just stay with you instead.
Her - oh, that’s ok then. Thanks for clarifying.

Nope.

Strange bloke this Blakey.... Can't bring himself to doff a cap to Sissoko, but happy to play cuckold for Eriksen cos #sexyfootball.

Seems DL wasn't impressed with CE's "honesty" either.

Still think we'd struggle.

Winks makes 0.8 tackles per game and makes 0.8 interceptions per game. Which are poor numbers by any standard and has regularly been called out for not following his man and failing to pick up runners.

He can still be a deep lying playmaker but have a more defensive minded midfielder behind him. If we move to a midfield 3 then Winks on the left, NDombele on the right and someone behind them to mop up would be smart.

You won't find a single team in any of the top leagues who play a deep lying playmaker as their deepest midfielder and put up the feeble defensive numbers Winks does. The only player I could really find with numbers reminiscent to Winks (as well as the same output) was Arthur over at Barcelona but even he has Busquets behind him.

Again though, I am happy to go with whatever Poch goes with. If he feels like Winks can be our midfield screen then so be it. Now let's help Winks out by signing better players to play with him and are actually suited to 3 in midfield.
