Transfers Summer 2019 transfer thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

So, Mr 'Future Apprentice Champion'; how does a business sustainably outspend another that has more spending power than them?

There you go with the sarcasm again. I am not claiming to know how to compete with these teams financially, I am simply saying that's what needs to be done if we want to realistically compete for the PL and CL, or do you disagree with that?

The reality is that we will likely need new owners in order to achieve it.

What difference does that make? Am I wrong? Please tell me how we can continuously compete for titles in this league and in the CL if we aren't matching those clubs financially?

People seem to think we can continue to operate under our current model and have continued success, keyword being continued because any team is capable of pulling off a Leicester at some point but in order to remain consistent and win titles, I am afraid you have to match the financial output of the teams above us.
He was sticking up for you

What's us building a billion pound stadium got to do with our ambition on the pitch?

If we want to sincerely compete for the PL and CL we can't afford to let that stand in our way or we risk becoming like Woolwich, a new stadium and fuck all to show for it.

We have also been told that the stadium wouldn't have an impact on spending?

My perspective is the same as our managers, I want us to win things and be the best club in the world and I know in order to do that we have to compete financially on the pitch, even if I dislike the idea of being a club like Man City.

I understand your argument and I agree to some extent that we have to spend big to compete. But it’s quite plain to see the reason we haven’t spent in 18 months is because of the stadium, not because anyone at the club lacks ambition.

Yes, we shouldn’t have been told that the stadium won’t impact spending power. But in the long run it’ll put our spending power on a far bigger level than its ever been.

I don’t want to sound like my Nan but it’s genuinely all for the greater good, and we’ll spend this window, there’s no doubt in my mind

It's not a "strawman' it's a hangover from a previous discussion whereupon the fella repeatedly said we should "spend like city" (exact quote!) yet repeatedly failed to see the flaw in his 'genius' (if not repetitively expressed) plan.

I'm just being economical in my efforts when addressing a lost cause.

No it's you taking what I said out of context and acting like I just want us to spend money and become a soulless pit of a club like Man City even if we lack the ability to do so, the idea of us just being a team that buys success makes me sick but the reality of the modern game makes it impossible to avoid if you want sustained success.

You're right, I said we need to spend like City if we wish to remain competitive but I never claimed to know how we can do that, I simply said that if Levy and ENIC cannot find a way to do so then we will always remain the bridesmaids, either until they do find a way or we get new owners.

I wish we didn't have to resort to competing financially but that's the reality of modern football.

Fair enough, although no one else is making this argument, although they are constantly accused of doing so, hence my comment.

As for "Get business done early and make sure our manager has his first choice targets", surely you can't have any gripe with that?

Cannot think of any manager who wouldn't love business done early and getting first choice targets'.

Same as most going out on a Friday night eyeing up the local girls.

However even clubs like Real Madrid fail to get in their 'first choice targets' - currently Spanish media saying Pogbas agent is being unrealistic and they may need to move onto other targets.

And the number of signings in PL so far this TW shows that more than half the clubs have not yet signed a player - even though all clubs other than CL finalists had their last match a month ago. So with s month gone of the TW it's pretty obvious that even though every manager would love early signings, most don't get them, so it's a lovely idea to get early signings but most don't !

Hope you're right mate, I take a more cynical approach because I dont believe ENIC have any intention of competing financially with the teams above us, even in the long term.

I think as long as they are making a profit, they are happy, like I said, that might just be me being cynical though.

Non stop speed and energy doesn't equal Ben Davis though.

If Rose being sold is to reflect on Ben, it suggests that Poch thinks Ben still has a future here and that Rose's injuries have taken their toll.

He can fill at in a pinch if we have all our CBs injured or have a man sent off but full time he is no where near good enough.

He's perfectly good enough.. Esp. as a #2.

"Is Sessengon good enough?" should be the question; as per last season the jury is very much still out.. Esp. if he is to slot straight in as a starter.

Just a point on new owners who are going to "invest" heavily in the team.

I certainly don't want an Abramovich type character (regardless of how he made his wealth) who loans the club £££££££££££££££££s which has to be paid back plus interest. If Abramovich was to call in his debt they would be fucked.

Cos he's had it numerous times before and yet again, he's getting no traction because his point boils down to "spend like City" or we're fucked.

Reality says we can't.

He has no answers beyond that...
Well, you haven't addressed my question, would you (and others) agree that his comment "Get business done early and make sure our manager has his first choice targets" is entirely reasonable?

That's my position this summer, just as it was last year and the year before that and so on, I've repeatedly said I couldn't give a gnat's snatch how much we spend or what the players cost

Don't forget perennial trf window challengers, Everton. :angryscouser:
Also don’t forget the clubs who actually spent most money last summer. Liverpool and Chelsea.

Liverpool has a pretty decent season that reflected their spend. Title challengers up until the last week and CL winners. Chelsea managed to finish above us despite having what many thought was a bad season. Also won a Europa League.

But just mention Fulham, West Ham and Everton because.....?

Not being funny but I’m quite certain Poch is a better judge of a player than anyone on here. If he wants him, he thinks he is.

I never claimed to have answers though did I? I am simply making an observation about our current situation, the same one that our manager has made.

You even said to me in a previous post that if Poch thinks like that then he will likely eventually move ob and we will find someone else, so basically in your eyes, it's either, stick with what ENIC and Levy are offering us or nothing else.

I am saying that if ENIC and Levy can't find a way for us to financially compete then maybe it's time they sold up and let someone take over who can because realistically that the only way we will ever be consistently challenging for titles, is if we can match or outspend the teams above us in the long run, do you disagree with that?
