What is sufficient standard?!?
Wanyama who has played 122 minutes for us? Because that is what you have to compare him to right now. We need some DM in the squad. I don't care if he will not be good enough for winning EPL/CL title.
Yea, sure, I would also prefer that we'd sign players that would suit us perfectly and who actually would be good enough. That would be perfect. But if alternatives are either to continue with Wanyama in squad or take a shot at someone who can be riskier, I will vote for option 2.

We have shown in the past that you can buy a foreign player and move him on with profit or close to 0 even if he will not become undisputed starter - Stambouli, Capoue, Yedlin, Wimmer, Chiriches, Paulinho, Holtby.

Don't come around to say that you just have to make 5 y contract NOR pay it off full. It is laughable strawman which has nothing to do with real life. Wanyama has been exceptional in the sense that his medical condition is ... well pushing suitors away. I can claim that never have we lost such kind of money for one player. We took losses of ~7 mil for both N'ije and N'koudou + payed them maybe 6 mil of wages. So COMBINED loss of 2 of biggest flops from recent years have been ~26 mil. Which is in fact in similar region what we EARNED as transfer profit from Wimmer, Yedlin, Stambouli, Holtby deals (once more - we did not have to pay off any of their contracts and release them for free!!)

So don't come out raging like a madman with phrases like "posted without engaging brain" and "how difficult it is to understand this or that". Maybe take it down a notch and talk about realistic things and numbers?

Its pretty realistic to say our squad is now at its maximum of overseas trained players, some of which are not of a suitable standard.

Aside from Wanyama (whose injuries set him apart), there are quite a few poor .purchases in there - everyone will cite their own examples but let us take Sissoko bought for £30m who is strong, and beleesed with a powerful run, but pretty much nothing else. In the same window we could have bought Grealish, Maddison and Brooks for the same amount of money.

Benefit is the 3 of them would have had a big upside (whereas with Sissoko there was never an upside in his value given his age when we bought him) and he's still essentially the same limited player that we bought, far from a disaster but way below the standard we need. And as I hammer home very time, we always have room in the HG quote, not in the overseas trained player quota, so we need to only use the valuable overseas trained player places for the better talents, not the average.

So to re-emphasise its all about better buying (and having a competent squad strategy), not trying to sweep up the mess which is expensive whatever figures you want to use.. And what we are now facing, and potentially making an even bigger mess

Absolutely, we should buy smarter. In fact we should invest millions upon millions into scouting and analytics department + appoint DoF!

Though all this takes time. Right now we should identify potential talent and move for him, even if things are not ideal. It is important to strenghten the team for top 4 challenge (still possible!).

P.S we signed Sissoko in 2016. Back then Madisson hadn't joined even Norwich yet. I think he was somewhat on our radar from the time he played for Norwich ;) .

Maddison was on our radar when he was still at Coventry !

Yup I know Sissoko bought in 2006 - used him as an example to try to show how low the squad has been poorly managed and how things can slowly come up and bite you.

Absolutely with you in appointing a DoF/Technical Director/Sporting Director or whatever together with an analytics department - we used to have a basic analytics department even pre-Redknapp, and Liverpool's current technical director (he who has got most of the current team there over the years) used to work at Spurs maybe 8 years ago. So its all achievable, just wont happen over night.

I'd add to the list a Loans manager to ensure our youngsters get suitable loands early enough so that the best of them could be eligible for Spurs first team via preseason matches

Spursidol Spursidol is absolutely right. It’s not just Nkoudou and Njie, it’s Janssen, Sissoko, Aurier, Moura, Lamela, Sanchez Foyth..,not one of them good enough to be considered a first team guaranteed starter - all of them taking up valuable non hg status - how much of the 180m of fee and what 70- 80m in wages are we going to recoup from that lot?

Of course there will always be wastage, and transfers are always a gamble, and not all of those were completely illogical - but a fucking big chunk of them were pretty poorly thought out in terms of value/potential/ethos fit/ when at least some ofthose “non starter squad remits” could have been easily filled with HG club trained players - meaning our very limited financial resources could have been better spent on less numbers but higher quality non HG.
