If we get Skriniar + Sangare and ship out Ndombele that is the only thing that would make sense to me from a squad building perspective, but this seems like the kind of deal that is too complicated to get over the line.

There’s no point trying to analyse Conte’s insatiable desire for players...any players. He’s like a transfer vampire.

It’s not about Ndombele himself, it’s about games where the opposition sit back. Replacing Ndombele with a defender will not help us break down those stubborn teams and that’s been our biggest weakness post lock down.

Have the best defense in the league If you want but if we don’t have any creativity in midfield we will struggle, if Tanguy wants to leave/Jose wants to sell him then so be it but we must replace him. We cannot have Lo Celso as our only creative outlet, Dele is a runner and always has been.

If we were going to try and keep playing Pochball, then yes, we would need a direct replacement for Ndombele. But we aren’t. We are going to be more of a counter-attacking side like Liverpool, who don’t really have any creative midfielders either.

Dele is good on the counter attack, we saw that with his assist for Sessegnon against Ipswich. Without a Modric/Dembele player the only way to create spaces for our attackers is to let opponents come out. We saw in the last 18 months how we cannot create chances in games where we push up and have 70% of the ball. Son can be lethal when he plays up front in a counter attacking team, much better than when he plays on the wing in our old possession football system with the high line. We need to get the most out of what we have.

This is why I'm surprised we're not in for James Rodriguez. 1 year left on his deal, a CAM and has good experience. I reckon we could get him for £20m-£30m.

There will be games where teams will be happy to sit off us just like this season, we can’t be a 1 trick pony.

Liverpool definitely aren’t just a counter attacking team and they have the best attacking fullbacks in the world, they stretch the pitch and break down teams with ease that sit back. We don’t and won’t have that kind of fire power at fullback.

Dele is great on the counter I agree but that will only work for us against against teams that are actually interested in playing football. We need a CM that can progress the ball through dribbling/quick threatening passes for those stubborn games. Preferably someone who can do both. Under peak poch we had this in the dembele and eriksen combo, if Lo Celso is injured and Tanguy leaves then we won’t have anyone with either of those qualities, dele can’t do either of those things. (Full disclosure Dele is actually my favourite spurs player so this isn’t about shitting on him).
