Given the huge investment we made in signing Sanchez; we've handled him appallingly!

Agree. How we've handled him has been absolutely pathetic. We should have been building him up to be the next Maldini but instead we've wasted critical years of his development making him uncertain of his place at the club, denying him vital game time, and chipping away at his swagger and confidence playing worse, less athletic CBs "with more experience". I'm almost certain our technical training is far worse than Ajax's is, so I'm not even confident we've been able to improve his ball skills since then either.

One of my biggest worries is that Tanganga seems to be headed down a similarly shitty path, caught between not quite being "good enough" to get significant game time while we pay Toby for middling performances on a swan-song contract for 150k a week.

I don’t think Reguilon will have an impact on our funds for a striker. Levy will always hop on a deal if it makes sense to the club, and Reguilon is one of those deals. Same as Bergwijn was.

Could put Dier in the back three and have him push up to DM alongside Hojbjerg during certain phases of play and pushing Ndombele a little bit further forward whilst Reguillon and Doherty bomb it down the wings.
Love a pendulating DM. You're on fire today. But this would imply some possession going on in our favor. Are you suggesting our Managerosaurus is gonna turn over 2 new leaves? Totti, you madcap.

As far as I'm aware, the buy black clause means Real simply have to match any other bid by Reguilon if Spurs are selling him. Is it that unreasonable?

Meanwhile, Romano has just tweeted that Real have basically accepted Reguilon offer. All depends on whether the player, who had wanted to go to United for the past few days, will want to come to Spurs. Feel like Jose's pulling power could be key.

Buy back is usually a fixed, agreed cost, possibly with incentives. There is also a separate option to match/auto-accept any other bid accepted by the selling club. They are not the same.

The Spanish press are running this story now.

One possible hiccup - Madrid are insisting on a buy-back clause
Even if we only get him for two years (Marcelo contract runs out) it's still probably a deal we should be doing.

We are more than happy to sell our players to Madrid, so if the player wants to go back and Madrid want to pay €50m, that seems fine to me.

The club can't worry about perception all the time, sometimes deals just make sense.

sounds better. he will be the best lb in the world he's that good. I just hope levy puts a clause in saying nothing below 70 mill

If we sign Reguillon for say 25m then thats us up to 43m net spend. This also is not including the need of a striker.

Signing Bale on loan and going to a 3 at the back pretty much means the net spend would stay at 43m and no Cb and St is needed as Davies will hopefully be seen as a Cb option in a 3 and Sess as the cover left wing back.

43m net spend...hmm I would hazard a guess that if all that happens we will sell N'dombele to put us back at zero net.

Hojbjerg, Winks, Sissoko, Lo'Celso, and Gedson for 2 starting Cm positions is OK I guess ( I'm unsure about Lo'Celso in a midfield 2 but with 3 at the back it offers more protection.

---------------------Lloris------------------------
----------Toby-----Sanchez-------Davies-----
Doherty----Holjbjerg----Lo'Celso----Reguillon
-------------Bale-------------------Son------------
------------------------Kane----------------------

Bergwijn, Dele and Lucas as cover for the attacking positions.

Dier and Tanganga cover cb.

Aurier and Sess cover wing backs.

Winks, Gedson, Sissoko cover CM.

Means we can also sell CCV, Foyth and Lamela if we wanted to generate even more cash and have a balanced squad.

I don’t think we will necessarily sell anyone.

We have money. We always have money. It’s whether we choose to spend it. You never know, Levy and the board might have realised we’re miles off the pace and if they have any desire to see us back at the top table, they need to spend accordingly.

Although Reguilon played in a back 4 for Sevilla, he's very attacking and I'm not convinced he could play as an auxiliary CB in our lop-sided, advanced RB, system.

Given Wolves fans who've watched Doherty for most of a decade seem pretty unanimous that he's a good RWB and average to poor RB, maybe Mourinho had a weekend epiphany and decided we have to switch to a 3 CB with WBs system.

Clearly this would suit Doherty, Aurier (if we don't find a buyer), Reguilon and Sessegnon.

Ben Davies would not be a good LWB, so presumably he would become a LCB option in a 3, or we'd sell him.

That said, I can't remember Mourinho in his long career ever regularly playing with 3 CBs and WBs.

Can anyone else?

3-5-2 does have major advantages for our players

1 some of our midfielders suit a 3 including Sissoko and Ndombele and negates the need so much for a traditional DM which we don’t have.

2 as you say our full back Doherty, Regulion if he comes, Sessegnon, Aurier are better in attack as wing backs.

3 means we can play Sanchez at the back who has pace unlike our other defenders but have Toby and Dier on the ball.

4 two up front means we don’t burn out as much our attacking players, Kane excepted (we really need another striker). Moura, Bergwijn and Son can rotate.

it’s not my favourite formation but it does fix squad issues.
