What does this prove? Did we offer Newcastle £30m that we willingly paid for Sissoko?

This is the more telling quote (from Gini Wijnaldum admits Tottenham talks before Liverpool move)

"Speaking to the Daily Telegraph ahead of Liverpool's match against Tottenham on Saturday live on Sky Sports the Netherlands international said: "I met Pochettino when I left Newcastle. I just felt Liverpool wanted to come to an agreement quickly."

From the same relegated newcastle and in the same summer window, Klopp paid £25m for Wijnaldum, Poch paid £30m for Sissoko - EOF

Sissoko was more expensive cos we fucked around with Wijnaldum fee and wages and then were forced to pay a deadline day premium out od desperation.

Drop Kane and Son into most other PL sides and they comfortably beat us

The rest of the players at those teams aren't better than ours

We are wasting two of the best players out there

Achieved it a few years ahead of schedule too. Then did it again, And again. And again. And again.

Then when he asked for some help to take that extra step, he got shat upon.

These chequebook managers do get that question put to them but there's also many who think they are just exceptionally skilled managers who have managed top teams because of their talent and that they could do it with lesser teams but haven't had the chance/would rather go for CLs and titles right away.

Notabadsquad was a huge offender (sorry to dig you out buddy) of constantly going on about how we needed a ruthless winner like Jose. Like that was the final part of the puzzle as opposed to arming our at the time exceptional manager with better players instead of imposing austerity on him.

This is probably one of the best posts I've ever read on this forum.

The 2nd paragraph in particular absolutely nails it.
 
Its the league that shows how good a team you are, over the course of 38 games. That’s what we watch week in week out and it’s why most of us loved what poch did for the club.

Whilst I’d love us to beat city and win the league cup, we played all of 3 games to get there including Stoke and Brentford. Team can very much be going backwards and still win a cup.

Personally I wanna see signs that this team is moving in the right direction at the end of the season regardless of a league cup.

I’m sure Mourinho will not be happy with anything other than a top 4 finish and the will also know the buck stops with him.

So why the initial claim of being priced out?

If we really wanted Wijnaldum, we would have gotten him. Even after missing out on wijnaldum, It would have been better to keep the powder dry than us paying £30m for Sissoko. It was a simply bad buy.

We're neither.

So many times we've seen that argument of "Could cheque book managers win things elsewhere?" - and whilst we're not Burnley, it's interesting that we now have a cheque book manager in charge who doesn't have an unlimited budget or a squad that's full of world class talent through years of success/spending.

I believe we took on a manager like Jose with our eyes wide open. In as much as we knew he’d want money to spend. And we had a big shiny new money printer of a stadium to get us those extra tens of millions he’d want to get new players in.

I’ve no idea how much we are losing by not having fans in (seen reports of over £1m per match) plus no NFL, concerts, etc. But it’s obviously going to effect what we can spend. Looks like we aren’t alone, judging by the lack of action from the other clubs in this window.

I just can’t believe we would have hired Jose if we weren’t willing to really push the yacht out and give him cash. I also don’t believe we are going to get rid without giving him the chance to do what he came on board to do. He’ll have at least next season, hopefully after a busy window and then we’ll see where we are.

I'm glad you said that.

The answer explains why we also don't invest in good players anywhere near as much as we should. Simply put it's down to greed for immediate gain with lack of foresight.

Levy didn't want to pay the Wijnaldum money because he thought we could get somebody cheaper in. We couldn't. Result was having to go for Sissoko and having no choice.
Levy thought hiring a new manager would be cheaper than Poch's rebuild. Wrong. Result was a higher paid manager who has brought in 9 players and needs at least 3 or 4 more most likely at high cost.

Do you honestly think if we miss out on top four and win nothing - we'd give Mourinho a third season?
