Match Newcastle United v TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR - Sunday 4th April 2021 KO: 14:05

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Dier is a good player, he's proven to be such, not great but good, highly versatile player that played at the heart of our midfield in the best team we've had in two generations. Toby was one of the League's best CB's for a short period but has reached that time in his career where he is starting to really struggle in an increasing number of games (quite why he went all out to sign him to a massive new deal is a major miss judgement).

I don't blame him for thinking that he could do better than Poch, the ego's and belief most managers need will be seen from anyone else taking the role eg I'm sure Nagglesmann would have the confidence in his own ability to improve on Jose.

But, mangers like Poch or Nagglesmann know that their coaching requires the team to play a system, I think their belief they have is how they get a team to play a certain way, get them to believe in this way. Jose's approach appears to have his players to believe in him (not the system because there isn't one).

Dier was good - but he's far too bulky now
Alderweireld just got old

Agree he has no system....its monopoly football, roll the dice and see what you land on

Guido’s fantasies like leading the Green Party!
Found it! I knew he said something weird (as usual) 5th February:

There was then the hint of something akin to his notorious “football heritage” press conference after the dire Champions League elimination to Sevilla in 2018, when Mourinho was asked if he’s feeling the pressure. When it was brought up that this had been the first time he’d suffered three defeats in a row since 2012, he immediately snapped back about how long it’s been since Spurs had won a trophy. “But since when without a title? Maybe I can give one.”

I do accept title may have meant trophy but still...phew...I thought I was going mad.

But if you know you've got weaknesses at CB, how about at least organising your team so that they protect them when we don't have the ball?

It's not like he's sacrificing defensive awareness and responsibility to play ferocious high risk proactive football is it? Or even possession based football.

It's Mourinho's job to navigate the strengths and weaknesses in his team and tactically adjust accordingly, but we seem to be set up to not have the ball, create chances or fucking protect our own defence either.
You think someone else will come in and make our defense great with these CBs? If poch failed with them, if parking the bus fails with them, then what will work?

I can remember thinking when he joined how odd his comments about the squad were, despite what we all knew, turns out he was just telling Levy what he wanted to hear. No Dan, the squad is great, you don't need to sell most of it and start again.
Yup that was 100% just sucking to levy who he knows is a stinge and would be very happy to hear that. Anyone who has seen dier and toby and sanchez play for would know they are shite and have been for more than 2 years now.

I missed the whole game as frankly id rather sit in my garden with a couple of mates I havent seen in literally months with some tunes on. My mate who is a Toon fan says they probably had the best chances, and I dont think hes a bullshitter given we both drove together to SJP a while back for a weekend on the piss and Spurs v Toon... is he correct? Ive been drinking all day so I have no idea

Unfortunately I was stone cold sober for this weekend’s torture, and yes, your friend is right.

Your mate is right. You wouldn't have known we were playing to get into the top 4 and them to stay out of the bottom 3. They were better than us and 22 shots. Our performance was as bad as Woolwich and Zagreb.

I don't see it, I just think he's gone - even at his very best he was one of the easiest players for us to upgrade.
Yet no one (I think) played more mins than him!

He is far from a technically gifted player, but he was mentally one of our best competitors, apparently, he was the number one choice to be England Captain. His greatest asset was his ability to play CB/RB/DM whilst not great at any he was still better than say Tanganga at RB (he didn't get skinned like Tangaga was today) but most of all his versatility meant Poch could deploy several different formations and switch things up without having to make a sub, often Poch changed system two or three times a half if he felt the need to.

Every good team has one of these, a Steve Urwin, a Phill or Gary Nevile etc..

He was very poor post World Cup and I think this has tarnished him so much people haven't looked further back.
