Difference is, the NHL is the biggest show in town by a huge margin. If the World Cup went without the players from the ESL, you'd still have some of the world's best players showing what they can do. Mbappe, Haaland, Jonjo Shelvey. All the players from the domestic leagues who aren't in this greed league.

Haaland will be playing for one of these teams by the time the next WC comes around.

Mbappe will be playing for one of these clubs, even if he stays at PSG, when it is WC time.

But I do agree Shelvy likely brings in 450-500 million viewers on his own!

Funny, I thought the same about the consortium's attempt to buy Newcastle. These are smart business people, I thought. They'll have foreseen the challenges about piracy and controlling persons, said I.

And the PL won't stop this, they'll want the money. Boy, was I wrong.

Even smart business people get things wrong.

Also, the players won't choose the PL because of the meritocracy, but they might choose Everton over Woolwich because they want to play in the World Cup, or they want to win the FA Cup, or the Ballon D'Or, or break Shearer's record. They might choose Atalanta or Lazio over AC Milan because who cares about finishing 7th in the ESL, when they could actually win something prestigious like Serie A?

Some will chase the money, because they did that for a while in China.

You lot know Harry Kane better than I will, is he the kind of player that puts lots of money over trophies and medals (and still a lot of money)? Is Son?
The FA Cup, Premier League, Serie A etc. will not be prestigious if these clubs breakaway so this argument is flawed.

When John McGinn is winning the Balon D'Or it takes some of the shine off.

I cannot fathom any supporter of football thinking this is anything but an embarrassment to the sport. I could see it from 'fans' who picked their team like you'd choose an apple. People with no link to the community, no link to the history, people who'd choose another club if the mood struck. But actual supporters of their club must see that this will be bad for it, in the long run.

This isn't that much different from CL football right now, especially with the new changes UEFA announced. When they start allowing teams to qualify for it the difference will not change much.

Most of the people that are being accused of "supporting" it actually are saying they are against it, but since it is coming anyways lets be realistic about it.

I am sure it is more than Sabre rattling but at the end of the day what are they going to do?

A PL without the big 6 gets maybe half as much in TV deals, maybe half as much advertising. They will lose massive amounts of money if they kick them out. It makes zero sense to do it.

People are emotional about it and that includes the FA and PL teams, but when they realize that this is a replacement for the CL and that the PL will likely end up making more as there will be increased interest in the big 6 teams and more money to squeeze out of TV contracts, they should be fine with welcoming them back.

What is there biggest concern? That teams like United, Chelsea, City will have more money than them? They already do. That teams like Liverpool, Spurs, Woolwich will get to play in Europe more than them? They already do.

I guess the fear is the gap will become even bigger and that's exactly what the money on offer would do.

I like European football and seeing Spurs take on the might of Madrid, Barca and Zagreb BUT only if it's earned. This isn't the way.

I want every single PL game to matter, this plan would turn it into a joke as there would be no ramifications or incentives on offer as we'd remain in the ESL regardless. Well, as long as we're bringing in the dough of course.

It's a load of bollocks mate.

Again, what prestige? It's a nothing league, only being marketed as elite because the founders are declaring it thus. The same founders who're only considered elite because of their success in the... leagues that they're now wanting to break away from. It's got no history, no prestige, no peril, nothing.
Combined, those clubs also have billions of supporters around the world. Real Madrid, Barcelona, and others don't suddenly lose their prestige because of this.

If Barcelona win the first one, who gives a shiny shit? If Man City win it three years on the trot, who cares? Nobody gets relegated, any new teams have no say in how it's run and get less of the pie for winning the whole thing than the originals get simply for existing in it. It's built on not being competitive, how's that prestigious?
Because it will be the most advertised and most watched league in the world, with the biggest start athletes and managers.

Luton Town versus Blackburn doesn't suddenly become more prestigious because they are in a more directly merit-based system.

At least when Division 1 became the Premier League it wasn't a closed shop, it remains broadly a meritocracy even if decades of money flowing into the top clubs have imbalanced it. There is a possibility, however slim, that Norwich could get into the 22/23 Champions League, this ESL would only invite teams that would fatten the coffers further. Not based on how good the team is, but how many viewers would tune in to watch them. My club, Newcastle, could well get an invite because we get a lot of viewers, more than Southampton, or Brighton. Is that right, or proper? Is that prestigious?

You're missing the point, "right" or "proper" doesn't matter in this equation.

Money is what matters now, and the teams with the financial strength and using their leverage to take control of their own destiny.

I'm not defending ESL and I'm not a fan of it, but I'm trying to be a realist. If money wasn't what rules the game Qatar wouldn't be having a world cup. Chelsea and Man City wouldn't have been in CL. Others would have had substantial transfer bans for their actions. The CL wouldn't be dominated by effectively 6-8 teams. All of the major leagues wouldn't be dominated by 2-4 teams. This has been going on for decades.

Could Norwich make it into the 22/23 CL? Sure, I guess. You know what would make it more likely? Money. If they were taken over by a massive sporting investment group or a tycoon, maybe it is likely.

Don't mistake a realist for support. I don't support this idea, but if it is happening I'd rather Spurs be a part of it than find them on the outside.

If they chuck them out, the TV money goes down the pan right? No one in Asia wants to watch west brom Vs Burnley on a Tuesday night. Reckon the ESL has got them over a barrel. Same applies to world cups and euros right?
I think so, kicking them out is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Same with the Euro's and World Cups, having these tournaments without all of the world's best players (and it will be basically all of them) is a bit pointless. They'll have no real credibility.

ESL have got the upper hand here by a long way.

It does still matter though as winning the league means something. Do you think that City felt great last year finishing 2nd because they easily qualified for CL? No, winning the league still means something.

I think the gap is already big enough that expanding it more doesn't matter much except for maybe Spurs, Woolwich and Liverpool. City, Chelsea and United already had such a financial gap over the other teams that widening that doesn't change much.

The teams still have to spend the money well. Woolwich having a massive financial advantage over Leeds has meant nothing this year. Spurs having a massive financial advantage over WH means nothing right now in terms of the table.
