Transfers January 2022 - Transfer Window

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

That’s my point. Hazard moved later than that window but who knows, if we had offered an extra £10M perhaps it would have got the deal done. In hindsight, that £10M would have paid for itself x10 or x20

You obviously don't appreciate that an extra 10m was big money in those days and if (as above) you too are talking a fledgling Hazard who had proven next to nothing then circa 25m was huge money for us (and such a player) back around 09/10.

Like the winter window when Spurs bought Ryan Nelsen & Louis Saha in their pursue of CL footy, or going 18 months without buying any players
Every club makes mistakes in the transfer market. Sometimes very expensive. The Lo Celso I can understand but the recruitment of Ndombele was blatantly stupid., and exposed how inept those scouts were There have been several news reports on how bad his attitude was.
But that doesn't mean - if L & L really have ambitions - Spurs shouldn't take risks in the transfer market. Every purchase is a risk. And it's Levy who's overseeing the scouting structure, so maybe he should spend a bit of money to overhaul it.

There was a report I read earlier in the season which said we are doing that now

And in his previous clubs, Emerson was used as RB - even though one may say the FBs at Barca are a mix of FBs & WBs. He was on loan at Betis for 2 seasons and did well there - as RB.
I don't think its relevant to talk about how FCB played him, seeing as he only ever played 3 games as a sub for them, a total of 90 mins.

Also, pretty much all full backs in Spain are expected to be wing backs as we would understand them, whatever the formation the team plays. The name of the position in Spanish- lateral - gives you some idea of the role they're expected to play, up and down the wing, the length of the pitch. There have been very, very few what you might call traditional left or right backs in the Gary Neville mould, I can't think of any in my 30 years here.

It's by no means a newish thing either. In the early 60s my father-in-law played left back for Atleti until military service put a stop to things, the thing he highlights about his style of play was his speed up and down the wing as opposed to his tackling or defensive positioning.

I think we've been burned going for players who are already known. Our tactic has been to go for lesser known players and hope we get them before a wealthier club comes in.
This means we're signing players like TND, GLC and yes, Romero, based on maybe one decent season.
No one at Spurs has figured out yet that one season wonders are common in football. Jansen wasn't even a whole one season wonder, he was a half season wonder. He was a nobody before than and went back to being a nobody pretty quickly.

You call 100+ games for Lille at the age of 20 and getting his debut for Belgium at 17 years next to nothing?

When all but doubling our trf record at the time to sign him....... All of a sudden perspective comes calling.

Besides you don't even know if he was genuinely for sale at that point........ Or how profound any interest was.

As much as the player needs to work for their time and put in the effort, the recruitment side of things has been so poor for some of our signings.

Jack Clarke for example. If I remember rightly, we chose Clarke over Bowen. Dreadful decision making.

We all wanted Ndombele, so we can't argue that. Lo Celso looked like he started well, but has just been so poor, worse than Lamela. Should have gone all out for Bruno, but again we fannied about with it.

Although some of Patrici's signings so far have been questionable, I actually think Conte is being given some freedom. I can't imagine Levy being happy to sell Bergwijn and Ndombele this window, but Conte would have pushed for that.

You missed the point that started this discussion: risk-taking.
At times the owners have to take calculated risks.
Anyway, you believe that Lewis is eligible to keep on making money from Spurs without spending any of his own...while i believe otherwise.

25m for Hazard in 09/10 would have been insane money for us.

That doesn't amount to a "calculated risk"......

You just made that up.

I think he might be in real life an announcer for a particularly bad train service.

Your next train will be arriving at , I’m sorry I cannot give you a specific time . The delay was caused because of unspecified problems in the South of England. I am unable to give any more detail at this time, I really shouldn’t even be announcing this.
We anticipate the problems which I am aware of but can’t impart to the travelling public at this moment in time to last for a period of 6 hours up to a maximum of 30 years. I realise this is extremely vague but the general public fail to realise just how sensitive this info is . Please remember things change so your train might or might not arrive at some point
That's very good..

Is he available?

Can he cross a ball?

What are his wage demands? Would paella and jamon iberico suffice?

I was talking about the summer of 2011 - the year before he got his big break and joined Chelski for £32m; so his fee would have been less than £20m.
Back in 2008, Spurs spent £17m on Modric, so such fees were not unheard of at Spurs that time.
Again you missed the point, though: Spurs should be able to find and identify prospects like that and sign them on a relatively cheap price BEFORE they make their break and richer clubs comes in.
