Whilst if true, it's totally gutting, do people really expect signings to happen without the following:

- Selling chairman to see if there are any other parties interested who would pay more
- Player's agent to ask the player where he wants to play, and to ask other clubs if they are interested

If another, potentially more attractive club shows interest what can you do? This isn't a defending Levy post, but some need a reality check.

If however we simply gave the seller what they wanted first time you can get singings over the line before any other clubs come in

It's a two way street if on the first of Jan we came in and offered them the 40 they wanted he's a spurs player in time to play in all those Chelsea games.

Levy's done his usual tricks and as usual it seems to be backfiring

They seem to be paying more then us just in bonus structures

Also if we have paid what they wanted early you limit the chance of someone else coming in and you give yourself more time to find someone else if it doesn't pan out

Now if/when he chooses Liverpool over us, we won't have time to get a replacement target sorted and we are gonna be left with a even shitter sqaud then when the window opened

Levy just doesn't seem to recognise that without big money or sporting prestige we have to do business much smarter. In his pea-brain, smart = late. That is fucking stupid. For a lesser club like us to pinch players on the radar of the big boys, we have to act early and make our pitch to the selling club and player. Make a good offer, tell them about the project. If they agree then we sign them, if they don't then we move on to other targets.

This shit of starting with low bids for important players with 5 days left on the clock, IT DOESN'T WORK. How can he still not understand this? Does he really think a top player is going to be easy to prise away with a low bid, a dubious sporting project and very little time for their club to replace them? Why does he think he is special? Why does he think other chairmen should dance to his tune when he refuses to do it for anyone else?

Liverpool have always been on this deal. If we went in earlier, they too would have.
I suspect the only reason we did try was to try and get him now before they strolled in and signed him in the summer

Precisely.

Which is why I laugh whenever anyone suggests we should wait until the summer as X or Y player is out of contract.
Like none of the big boys will snap any players worth a light up.

To get those players we needed to be buying them out of their short contracts
