Towards the back end of last season our team barely changed.

It is still a worthy thought experiment in identifying the maximum ability of the squad. Assuming everyone is fit and playing at their mean level - I would bet that XI is considered our strongest.

So over the course of a season, barring long-term injuries, I'd imagine they make the most appearances.
The team barely changed because all the alternatives were/are fucking woeful.

The last year is a club option, I believe. We won’t trigger it.

Ah, ok.... Wasn't aware of it being an option.

.....But if that is the case then the only way we get a fee for him NEXT summer (as suggested by an earlier post) is to extend it with the express purpose of selling him straight away..... Doesn't seem very likely.

It's not a "mindset".....

The notion of playing your best available XI from the kick off is going nowhere... It's not old fashioned. It's not like injuries are a modern phenomena either and we've had 25man squads for donkey's years now.

Regardless of the new 5-sub rule; having 2 x world class players in every position is still exclusively the domain of petro-clubs, so the bench is always gonna reflect a drop-off in some areas.

.....Even then Pep has bought players like Ake, Delph, Zinchenko, Torres etc.

....Peak United still had Brown, Fletcher, Park, Raphael etc.
I don’t disagree with that - my point is people were saying our first 11 hasn’t really improved. If we start our first game with the best first 11 from last season we will still be far stronger overall - as the squad is vastly stronger

I 'think' i was the one that sparked that strain of the convo.... What I was saying is that DESPITE the obviously squad improvements; until we can get the WBs firing we're not improving upon what we were when at our best last season.

He’s going to make twice as much money at Spurs than at São Paulo. If we pick up the option then there’s always the danger of him staying the additional year and not budging. Like you, I’m pretty certain there will be an agreeable parting of the ways with memories of THAT hat-trick at the end of the season.

Conte didn't change things as he didn't trust our options outside of a core group - now we're bringing 6+ in over the summer he'll have a much bigger pool of players to choose from - will be interesting to see just how he approaches things wrt that

From my perspective 5' 10" IS short, I'm 6' 3"

The other 2 must be oompah loompah's

I hate getting asked how tall I am. If a giant like you asked me I'd say 5ft 8.
If any man shorter than me asks to my face I have to say 5ft 10 because they all think they're 5ft 8 at least. Mostly they're about 5ft 6.

Honestly, everyone under my height thinks they're taller than they are. That by default makes me taller than I am :roflmao:

But back to the point - the look on their face when their 5ft 7 self sees a proper genuine 5ft 10 inch athlete is hilarious.

Height is weird. I am 6’2ft which makes me over average but got on the jubilee line a few weeks back and there was about 15-20 tall guys in the same carriage. 1-2 of them 7ft and over, a bunch of 6’8ft’s and the rest around 6’6ft. I assume this must be some kind of basketball team but no they where all separate individuals so it was just a random carriage of giants. I felt very small I have to say.

In regard to football you don’t get that many giants, Crouch and a few others but it’s normally the goalkeepers.

Yes and no.

We are not going to end this transfer window with a 23 man squad with little drop off between players but we are going to end it with more than 11 players with limited drop off - to illustrate the point, assuming a 343 system :

Forwards - Its 3 from 4 players now (Kane, Son, Kulusevski, Richarlison )
CM's - Possibly 2 from 4 players (Bissouma, Bentancur, Skipp, Hojbjerg)

And if we sign a 'creative CM' that some predict we may end by playing a different formation in some games with 3 midfield players and either reverting to a back 4 or the Kulusevski position is replaced by this creative CM

And with the above, Spurs are likely to have a first team where its really 11 players from maybe 17 realistic 'top choices', some of whom will rotate as its not sensible to ply every weekday and weekend (ie 3 days rest between matches, and maybe less due to overseas travel) or rotate if Conte wants to operate with 2 or 3 different formations.

And on top of the 'maybe 17 realistic top choices' there are probably another 6 players who are not quite top players (eg Moura as a forward/wing back).

Of course the 'maybe 17' can only be firmed up at the end of the window.

And that's why Spurs are bringing in the likes of Richarlison to provide real competition and alternatives to Conte so he's not dependent upon picking a first X1 but can pick from maybe 17 players without a huge drop off in quality.

And Richarlison has not come here just to sit on the bench all the time as would be implied by picking the same starting X1, .

Keeps the opposition guessing too.

Yeah as a legitimate 5’8 dwarf (I know my precise height as been measured for work more than once) it’s very funny how many times guys have told me they’re 5’10 despite being my height or shorter.

Embrace the Oompa Loompa life ffs.
