I saw this suggestion on the topic of a Dier backup and figured it could be worth discussing on here. What about Ben Mee?

Mee is currently a free agent. He's been the Burnley captain for 10+ years, so he adds leadership to the defence just like Dier. He's also good in the air, 87th percentile in percentage of aerials won among the top five european leagues. On top of this he is homegrown which is good since we have free slots for homegrown players.

He wouldn't be an upgrade on Dier. But should be a reliable veteran backup who would probably be happy to come in and play that role and get a nice last payday.

Taken from Foxestalk…

“Players whose contracts expire in Summer 2023;
Youri Tielemans, Caglar Soyuncu, Daniel Amartey, Ayoze Perez, Jamie Vardy, Kasper Schmeichel, Nampalys Mendy, Ryan Bertrand, Hamza Choudhury and Jonny Evans (10 players).

Players whose contracts expire in Summer 2024;
Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison, Kelechi Iheanacho, Yannik Vestergaard, Dennis Praet, Like Thomas and Marc Albrighton (7 players).

That's 17 first team players who have less than 24 months left on their contracts here at Leicester. Less time than a normal phone contract ffs.

How have we positioned ourselves this badly and have left us with such little room for manoeuvre when we look to sell our better players? We're coming out of a golden era of Leicester talent in the likes of Soyuncu, Tielemans, Maddison, Ndidi and Iheanacho. Likely worth in excess of £250m if under contract that will either leave for free of for pittance. All at the perfect age and stage in their development to play UCL football for the world's biggest clubs and we're going to piss their fee up the wall.

The only players we have 'tied up' are;
Harvey Barnes, Danny Ward and Tim Castagne (Until 2025)
Bouba Soumare, James Justin, Ricardo Pereira and Patson Daka (Until 2026)
Wes Fofana and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Until 2027)

Players like Maddison and Ndidi need to be paid properly and need to be tied up so that we can guarantee a proper fee for when clubs come knocking. Reports of £25m for a player like Tielemans just shows how much we're ****ing ourselves over. He's a player that came for £32m and then improved further here ffs.

Our inability to move deadwood on has been laughable. Hamza, Perez, Mendy, Praet and Amartey should all have left years ago. Liverpool routinely get £10-20m for players that are surplus to demands there. Obviously these players aren't as good as Liverpool's reserves but we should be getting £30m+ for these sorts of players, instead we're probably going to get nothing and will spend the time waiting for their contracts to expire with them out on loan with us still paying a portion of their wage.

The big reset we're supposed to have been having has obviously stalled and that's because we've got a bloated squad of players on expiring contracts and nobody wants them.”

No. Ben Mee is good in a backline that plays deep but he has not got brilliant reading ofthe gamee to play higher. That is why not many premier league clubs have looked at him

By this stage of the 04/05 window we'd signed;
Paul Robinson
Marton Fullop
Pedro Mendes
Sean Davis

In that window we added;
Edman
Atouba
Naybet
Carrick
Ziegler
Paramot

In the winter window we went on to sign
Andy Reid
Michael Dawson
Edson Silva

A few of these were nonentities but a lot of them elevated the club a lot and quickly.
This window has vibes of that window. A lot of players coming in, early, that are fit for purpose.
Naybet was a classy player
Cannot remember Edson silva at all

Liverpool deadwood is typically better than half the Leicester squad though.

I know he's become a bit of a running joke on here but he can't be a bad player to have Napoli and Rennes interested in spending 20m on him. Two clubs that scout well. Been good the little I've seen of him, but would be a risk given the level he's played at.

Definitely think we need one more ball-playing cb in the door this summer whoever it might be.

Genuinely have no recollection of him at all.
Looks like a complete nobody Edson Silva (footballer, born 1983) - Wikipedia
He was. An Arnesen punt the type of transfer he does but never comes to anything but then there were other ones that became Ronaldo and Kevin De Bruyne. The fact is Arnesen was a DOF who liked to go for quantity and go through them at a quick rate. The problem with his time at Chelsea is he spent over 100 million on youngsters and most did not do anything. Arnesen was only at Spurs one Summer.

Good defender for Dycheball but can’t do anything outside the box. CBs at the top end have to be able to pass the ball and read the game, step out, take risks. Not just stand in the 6 yard box heading balls away.

That's not being negative, that's being realistic. I didn't say we wouldn't get Maddison at all, I said we won't get him for 50m.
I don't know about that. If Phillips went for 45 it's far from impossible we get him for 50. About the same age, two years left on contract. Phillips a regular starter for the national team, not Madison.

I don't share your obvious distain for Maddison, but I do agree regarding our current flexibility.

I can't understand why people think we need to sign a specific CAM to go 352 when any one of Kane, Son, Kulu or Richarlison is perfectly capable of dropping deep and doing it. Kane is actually better at it than almost any specific CAM alive today as well.
Yeah that’s my point. Having Rich to slot in upfront makes it less of an issue (Kane deep), but I wouldn’t want to see him there regularly….. Maddison might be a good option to be fair, goal threat and dead balls are a step up
